Armored Core 6 Interview Talks Complexity, Assembly, and Choice

Armored Core 6 interview with PlayStation talks about the game’s choices, complexity, mech assembly, as well as new player tidbits.

The PlayStation Blog had an exclusive interview lately with Yasunori Ogura and Masaru Yamamura, the game’s producer and director, respectively. Here, they went over a wide range of topics, specifically related tocombat, complexity, and mechassembly.

One of the core tenets of development was that they did not want to change the “breadth and complexity of the customization and assembly.” This just confirms that Armored Core 6 will still have tons and tons of options for players when building up their mechs, and will have all the stats and numbers that they could ever want. Of course, there is also a fine line between complex and unwieldy, and as such the developers have decided to make tutorials much more frequent, and appear much earlier on, in an attempt to ease in newer players to the franchise.

While going out and blowing up buildings and robots is all fine and dandy, the Armored Core games are really known for the endless tinkering with the “perfect” setup that will just get changed two hours down the line. Yamamura thinks of mech assembly as a sort of “character-building” wherein they fine-tune every element of our player. Since Armored Core 6 will require players to make tweaks quite often, it is their hope that players will find attachment to their creations. And of course, they also want you to feel like a badass mercenary with a giant gun.

Assembling your mech won’t just affect stats, but also the look and feel of your weapon of mass destruction. One big example is how changing your veryLegswill alter the way you play the game. Want balanced movement? Pick humanoidbipedal legs. Want to go really fast? Go with the painful-lookingreverse joint. Fancy floating in mid-air? Go with theTetrapod. Become a literal tank?Tank Treadshave got your back!

Weapons will also come in different styles, of course, like shotguns, rifles, pistols, and whatnot. But ammo comes in different forms as well. Each weapon will also find its use case as well as its perfect player. Weapons in Armored Core 6 will have different bullet patterns, recoil, and more. So one shotgun will feel totally different from another. Players will be able to equip four weapons at a time – one for each arm and two on their back. These can be mapped to all of yourcontroller’s shoulder buttons, and can technically be used all at the same time.

FromSoft is very aware that there will be a massive influx of players who have never played an Armored Core game, especially with the success of their souls games. Given this, many may be in over their head with all the decisions that they need to make outside of combat.

To help newer players succeed, the developers have implemented several features that should help. One such feature is a Target Assist which should make your mech lock ontoenemiesthat may get within range. This should be helpful as Armored Core 6 will have tons of verticality, meaning that players will need to navigate in three dimensions and balance different threats and other factors. If you’re not a fan of auto aims, then go just use melee blades as your weapon of choice. There’s no need to aim if you just get up close and too personal with your foes.

Yamamura also recommends getting the bestGeneratorpart you can buy (and one that’s within your weight limit!) when assembling your mech. Generators will dictate how much overall power your system can handle, and will also dictate how much you can fly around on the battlefield.
