Armored Core VI Story Trailer Paints a Bleak Future
Armored Core VI gets a meaty story-heavy trailer. The footage depicts a desperate assault on a heavily armed base.
We all know that Armored Core VIlooks insane. The first mech game from FromtSoftware in 9 years already gave us an amazing first impression a few weeks back, but the veteran developers keep punching up the hype. They recently released a bleak story trailer that paints a dark future. It’s full of action, but there are some subtleties that may go unnoticed at first viewing.
Let’s jump into the Fires of Rubicon.
The Armored Core VI story trailer opens up with the narration of some unknown character, who “isn’t craving company”. It seems that this is highly likely to be the game’s main protagonist, as they are just waking up and regaining consciousness. We’re talking to a “Handler Walker”, a name that’s been thrown around already many times in the past. The character wonders what happened to a group of other mercenaries. Then we get to see what happens.
We then see a group of 3 ACs assaulting a base in an extremely disadvantageous situation. Three mechs are speeding through a hail of gunfire, frantically trying to reach their destination. While it looks like the pilots are extremely skilled in their own right, one mistake is all it takes for death to rear its ugly head.
One Core valiantly launches a hail of missiles into the air, only to be blasted to smithereens a moment later. That split second where they slowed down was enough for theirenemies’ laser beam to slice the Core in half, causing a lifeless husk to fall onto the ground. Pilot 619 went out in a blaze of glory as his missiles eventually meet their mark, raining destruction everywhere.
The rest of the Armored Core VI trailer goes in a similar fashion. Eventually, the two remaining survivors, pilots 617 and 620 breach the base’s walls. The closer they get to their target, the more they are pounded by enemy bullets. Even one pilot’s powerful energy shield is not enough to brave the onslaught, as it is almost instantly destroyed, along with the AC’s arm.
We then get surprised by the base’s hidden guardian; amassive tank-like defenderthat dwarves the ACs tenfold. The new challenger then starts target-locking pilot 620 within its viewfinder, then demolishes its foe with two well-placed beam shots. It then starts firing at the lone AC, Pilot 617. After a grueling battle, the last AC remains somewhat victorious but ultimately sacrifices itself to destroy its objective.
Just another cog in the machine. It seems that AC pilots (and ACs themselves) are disposable resources taken advantage of by huge corporations. Armored Core has traditionally been adystopian look at our future, and it seems Armored Core VI is no exception. Our character looks to be namedPilot 621, and Handler Walker is “giving us a reason to exist”. It looks as if the character is some sort of cyborg and has a direct interface link to the Armored Core looming over our body.
Armored Core VI, developed by From Software, reboots the classic franchise with a touch of Souls-like influence. The game emphasizes 3D space mobility, allowing players to pilot mechs freely. The level design includes expansive exteriors and more confined interiors with intense combat mechanics, resembling Sekiro’s posture system. Players must manage impact and boost bars, similar to stamina in Souls games.
The game offers extensive customization of mechs, weapons, and equipment, influencing gameplay styles. Armored Cores, also called ACs, are massive mechanized combat vehicles in the Armored Core Series. They serve as essential tools for Interstellar Companies and are highly adaptable, capable of various movements and physical configurations.
Pilots can customize their ACs withdifferent parts, allowing them to take onformslike tanks, humanoid constructs, quad-legged, or reverse-legged designs, each with unique strengths and weaknesses. Dynamic loadout changes between missions add strategic depth.
Armored Core VI retains the signature FromSoftware elements, appealing to both mech and Souls fans. It releases this year, on August 25th.
