This time around, the story will take place in the fictional land of Lantarna. Alchemy has slowly faded from humanity, essentially almost dying out completely. And thus the adventures of newcomer Resna Sternenlicht shall begin, the first new protagonist after four years.
Our heroine Resna is a dreamy one. She, just like Ryza before her, is extremely motivated and outspoken. From circumstances not explained just yet, she discovers the power of alchemy and wishes to spread it across the world. Her passion burns bright with the intensity of many suns, which is further accentuated by her hyper-fast conversation speed whenever she gets to talk about her interests.
Eventually, Resna encounters an amnesiac named Valeria on her quest to find the “Continent of the End” which is said to hold the secrets of alchemy. Valeria awoke a few days before this fateful meeting and has taken up many odd jobs to sustain herself while she tries to find out who she truly is.
As expected, the two team up to unlock the secrets of the world, unaware that their every action is being watched by the secretive Moonlight Society. This organization is shrouded in utter mystery with goals that are unknown to the world around them. They accept less-than-legal requests that other groups would not even dare think of accepting. Caution needs to be exercised and considered at every step.
There are other characters in the game that Resna and Valeria will meet along the way like Flocke Cerha, a friendly girl who prays for the safety of her parents back to her, together with Laze Dach, a drunk ex-sailor whom Flocke takes care of. Of course, players will also come across familiar alchemists like Ryza herself who apparently rescued Resna from danger, and Firis, a true-blooded adventurer.
Like the other Atelier games, Atelier Resleriana maintains a similar gameplay loop revolving around gathering materials, synthesizing them for use, and battling against dangerous foes.
Gathering materials is no easy feat – you will explore the beautiful and luscious world of Lantarna and make your way into unknown dungeons to obtain the ingredients you need. You also need to prepare for a boss fight at the end of every dungeon so be sure to gear up! Successfully doing so grants access to higher tiers of difficulty, allowing you to obtain better rewards. Alternatively, in combat, you can aim to get a higher score each time either by dodging enemy attacks or dealing tons of damage per attack you make.
Once you have the materials you need, it is time to synthesize them to create consumables and equipment. By simply combining the traits of your main characters and companions with their corresponding “gift colors” and those of the ingredients, you will come up with various recipes. Just remember that even though you have a surplus available, you may need to wait to gain mana over time before using the synthesize function.
Last but not least is the battle system. Here, players have to keep a watchful eye on the initiative of every character to plan the best order of effects to activate. Doing so could potentially give you the upper hand in combat. With your synthesized items, you may just win encounters more easily. Also, remember to invest in the “Grow Boards” of your party with the help of power-up materials and memoria. Memoria are cards that when used, will enhance the overall strength of a character. After all, offense is the best defense.
In addition to mana, Atelier Resleriana will have players pay attention to their stamina to not only gain more materials but also to improve their characters. You can perform activities to recover this resource over at the Royal Capital City, which also provides quests to progress the story forward.
