Atlas Fallen Shows Off Its Fast-Paced Beat-em-up Combat
Atlas Fallen gets an action-packed combat overview trailer. We see what devastating tricks our heroes will have up their sleeves.
Our favorite upcomingsand-based RPG, Atlas Fallen, showed off its devastating combat. Developer Deck 13 and publishers Focus Home Interactive showed off 5 minutes of epicgameplaythat demonstrates the game at its finest.
It all starts from the wedge that was driven between the gods and mankind. An angry sun god has taken it personally and has assaulted Atlas with vicious strikes, leaving it filled with enough sand to make Anakin Skywalker cry. Humanity was at a disadvantage until the character (and their co-op partner, if they have one) found a mysterious gauntlet that allowed them to turn the tide.
The gauntlet in Atlas Fallen is so powerful that it can manipulate the very sand itself. Changing the form of the sturdy dunes allows its user to create amazing weapons and unleash devastating attacks. Our handy gauntlet, which does not talk like Forspoken’s Cuff, is the sole source of both our offensive and defensive capabilities.
Players can equip two weapons at a time which can be swapped on the fly. You can chain wondrous combo attacks by using them at different points in an attack chain. There are three primary weapons in Atlas Fallen. First up with the massive Dune Cleaver which can cleave dunes.
The Dune Cleaver is an axe that can also transform itself into a hammer when you need to bludgeon things to death. Next is the Sandwhip which the hero can use to unleash a flurry of blows. Last is the Knuckledust, which is a pair of sturdy gauntlets that can be used to beat foes into submission.
One more nice feature that Atlas Fallen has is the Momentum System, which is represented by a three-segment blue bar that sits comfortably just below our health bar. This not only represents how well we’re doing in combat but also makes us more deadly. Landing successful hits in quick succession will build up our Momentum, which makes our weapons larger and deal much, much more damage. The higher the momentum, the more powerful we become.
However, the tradeoff here is that as our momentum goes higher, so too does the damage taken. So it will present a system that rewards aggressive players who still maximize their evades and defensive powers.
Momentum can also be used to unleash super abilities that have effects that will turn the tide of battle. Just like a super bar, this will unleash an ultimate ability but fully drain your momentum in the process.
Enemies in Atlas Fallen are also quite varied. They come in many shapes and sizes. Collectively known as “Wraiths”, these foes are all attuned to the sand god and have some connection to the sand itself. Of course, we’ll initially be facing off against fodder enemies who are smaller in size and have a more basic moveset.
Eventually, we’ll get the chance to face off against some massive enemies who will dwarf the player entirely. These enemies in Atlas Fallen seem to be a much more complicated affair, in that the player can target individual body parts. Destroying specific areas of these monsters can disable some of their attacks, give them massive debuffs, or even grant you special loot once you carve them up post-battle.
Time to make yourself a fancy monster-based hat in Atlas Fallen!
Speaking of hats, Atlas Fallen is also leaning heavily into the RPG side of things when you look at the plethora of customization options. Looking at Armor first and foremost, players will have access to 5 Primary Stats: Recovery, Offense, Defense, Fortune, and Shatter. Different armor sets will have different strengths, weaknesses, and looks. As you upgrade some sets, you will also eventually unlock powerful traits that make that set of gear even more specialized.
Next up are the Essence Stones which are a mix of active and passive abilities that we can equip onto our character. These all have wildly varying effects that allow you to truly customize your combat experience. For example, some stones significantly reduce your cooldowns when defeating enemies, others unlock different moves, while a few even grant you access to magic like summoning a sandstorm to pelt your foes. Want to lay down the pain with a massive hammer? There’s an Essence Stone for that.
There are over 150 Essence Stones in the game, so it will be quite the ride when mixing and matching different options.
