Atlus Bans Spoilers About Metaphor: ReFantazio

Atluswants the story surprises in its game to remain intact, and for that reason, it has issued guidelines directed at streamers prohibiting spoilers.

Metaphor: ReFantazio, the new game from Atlus for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, has become not only one of the standout releases of the year but also the king of the JRPG category.

Its reception was already promising with the game’s extensive demo, but even the most optimistic forecasts didn’t anticipate its success, with a record of one million units sold on its first day.

A large part of this triumph is due to the captivating story ofMetaphor, a key element that has led Atlus to issue a statement warning against spoilers.

Atlus’ new work has become the star JRPG among streamers and YouTubers, but the company doesn’t want spoilers to ruin the experience for other users.

Atlus doesn’t outright ban the “spoilers” that might come up during a stream, but it does warn against the intentional publication of spoilers by content creators.

As detailed in the new video and streaming guidelines on Atlus’ website, broadcasts must be for personal and non-commercial purposes, and follow these rules: “Spoilers in video thumbnails, titles, and any content that viewers can’t avoid are prohibited.” In other words, avoiding spoilers when the title of a video or its image gives something away.

The company aims to be thorough, and although it acknowledges that some things may be revealed in streams and long videos, it suggests that the title includes a note saying “Contains spoilers.”

That way, as many people as possible can enjoy content related toMetaphor: ReFantaziowithout unpleasant surprises they might otherwise learn ahead of time.

The company is trying to combat a common practice on YouTube and sometimes on Twitch, where shocking titles and thumbnails reveal the most important parts of a video game.

Atlus also warns against the use of the game’s soundtrack: it can be used in the background if videos have commentary or are streamed, but never in isolation to only share the music.

All these measures reflect the scale ofMetaphor, Atlus’ most ambitious game, which has allowed the company to showcase ideas and concepts never seen before in its other titles.

Although the director ofPersonahad full creative freedom, he has also taken inspiration from works likeThe Lord of the Rings, which influenced the United Kingdom of Euchronia.
