Baldur’s Gate 3 Director Already Onto “The Next Game”
Larian Studio Head Swen Vincke talks about the aftermath of Baldur’s Gate 3’s release and what’s next for the studio.
Baldur’s Gate 3 has had apinnacle full launch, and with the Playstation 5 release this week, the CRPG seems unstoppable. In a recent sit down between Larian Studio Head Swen Vincke and Dungeons & Dragons’ Todd Kenreck, they go over the challenges of producing such a wide branching game narrative-wise and it’s resulting number of peculiar problems.
Discussed in the video Vincke explained that the RPG system in Baldur’s Gate 3 has so many permutations that it pushed the number of hours of cut scenes alone to 174 hours. Giving players great player agency also means a rather complicated approach to dialogue and story outcomes. But player consequence isn’t something new to Larian Studios, as it was a part of previous games such asDivinity Original Sin 2.
One major success of the game was the wider audience it reached. Players who didn’t necessarily know they liked this type of game now are introduced to the D&D-styled gameplay that offers a lot of options when it comes to creativity. That’s very true if you’ve seen how players have taken elements and just run with it. A forty-something barrel stack? Go for it. A playground of choices and plenty of consequences.
New endings have also been introduced. A recent patch gaveKarlach a new endingas well as expanded dialogue and brought a number of fixes as well as changes to the game. Vincke shared that they will have a team that will continue to work on Baldur’s Gate 3 post-launch, but as for Vincke as of thePS5 console launchhe’s “done” with the game. The next project is already in sight and a new game is already planned.
If you were hoping for some hints of what that might be, I’m sorry to say Vincke is keeping this one close to his chest of shiny armor. He didn’t shed any light on what the new game will be but the team will be taking a break before moving forward. He described the development process as being rather intense and full of “adrenaline” working on such a lengthy game as Baldur’s Gate 3. But some things already seem to be in motion.
What’s next is a break but you’re already thinking about the next thing because you’ve been sitting on it for some time already. So there’s a lot of stuff that’s already moving in that direction and eagerness it’s start working on it but you you do have to take a moment because it is this is very intense industry to be in…
