Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden Shows Off Tough Choices in Extended Gameplay Trailer
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden presents an extended look at its gameplay, highlighting the story and tough choices along the way.
DONT NOD’s upcoming action game, Banishers of New Eden has just revealed an extended look at itsgameplay. The footage is about 15 minutes long and shows off a specific quest in the game, from start to (almost) finish.
Here, players get to appreciate the dark world the developers have created, as well as the difficult choices the player will have to make.
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden takes place in the titular land of New Eden, as players take up the mantle of both Antea Duarte and Red Mac Raith. The two are star-crossed lovers, and self-proclaimed “Banishers” who help protect the helpless living from the malevolent dead who refuse to pass on. As fate would have it, Antea perishes and gets transformed into the same kind of spirit that the couple is so adamant about exorcising.
Instead of helping her move on, Red goes on a quest to resurrect his lover. Antea being a spirit has access to some ghostly powers in combat as well as exploration. It also seems that nobody really acknowledges her presence, as Red can be often mistaken as mumbling to himself when he tries to communicate with Antea.
The Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden gameplay footage opens up with a meeting between Red and a local leader named Thickskin Newsmith. The moniker is well-earned, as Thickskin has a reputation for being “harsh”, though Antea somewhat agrees with her hardened methods. Apparently, groups of refugees have gone missing, seemingly killed by some rabid animal. Antea tasks us with hunting this beast and arms us with a whistle to call for help and her begrudging sister’s musket.
Our heroes’ adventure then starts out as they explore the forests surrounding Thickskin’s village. They are greeted with slaughtered wolves and other horrors. Skilled Banishers that they are, Red is able to “sense” the thoughts of the creature that maimed the canines. Antea identifies the foe as a “Scourge” as she can hear many voices coming from one body.
The Scourge is closer than anticipated, as it starts sending wisps at the defeated bodies, resurrecting them and initiating combat. Players can make use of Red’s swashbuckling sword and gun style to fend off his foes with great style and poise. However, players can swap to Antea on the fly to reveal her monk-like fighting style. She can punch and kick her foes, enhanced with spirit energy. Antea can also teleport instantly to enemies, closing great distances in a single move.
Enemies in Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden seem varied enough, as they consist of ghosts, ghouls, reanimated wolves, and other horrors. They all have different approaches in trying to bite off Red’s head, so combat should be quite the ride. Some enemies are possessed by extremely strong spirits that, when you finally break their physical form, you will need to deal with the spirit that lingers on this earth by banishing it permanently.
It appears that not everything is as it seems, as the missing refugees are discovered to have been slaughtered by wolves along their way. The cause? Thickskin’s wolf whistles that she gives to the unknowing people. In their desperation, they cry for help which inadvertently calls upon the wolves to attack them instead.
The game gets even more complex as Red faces off against the Scourge itself, and ultimately beats it. Boss encounters look to be quite exciting, as they have multiple phases with varying attacks being launched at players. You’ll have to carefully balance Red’s physical prowess with Antea’s ghostly skills in order to claim victory.
We then come to the revelation that even more people are involved in this scheme, and things are never so simple. The player is then presented with a choice: leave the town alone or sacrifice Thickskin to help resurrect Antea.
Weighty choices shall rest upon your shoulders as players journey through New Eden. Every choice will shape the destiny of denizens within. Shall you uphold your solemn Banisher’s pledge or spite the living in a last-ditch endeavor to resurrect the love of your life? Banishers: Ghost of New Eden releases on November 7th.
