However, the new footage confirmed that they won’t have to wait too long. The Games Kitchen has broken their vow of silence, as the Metroidvania sequel will release quite soon.
Blasphemous 2’s story continues from the end of the previous DLC, Wounds of Eventide. We see our previous guide, Deogracias (still kneeling), holding up The Penitent One’s coffin in some more haunting imagery. The Penitent One awakens to continue his quest to end the vicious cycle of the curse known as The Miracle, once and for all.
The Penitent One is yet again stuck in an endless loop of live, die, repeat. He is resurrected in a totally unfamiliar land to explore. Just like its predecessor, Blasphemous 2 will be a non-linear world that will be up to the player how to tackle. True to its Metroidvania roots, we can assume there will be a lot of backtracking involved and revisiting old areas once you unlock new abilities.
It also seems that the story is quite hidden and not told in any traditional way, like Elden Ring or Bloodborne. New NPCs will litter the landscape, sometimes offering aid, sometimes demanding it. Every interaction will tie into the narrative somehow, and reveal the long-forgotten secrets of this new land.
One of the biggest features of Blasphemous 2 is the introduction of new weapons. The Penitent One will no longer be limited to using his signature sword, the Mea Culpa.
The first weapon set seems to be a sword and dagger combo. Its attacks are much quicker than the Mea Culpa and look to be leaning towards a more fast-paced offensive playstyle. This doesn’t mean that you will lack defensive options when using this weapon, however. The Penitent One uses this weapon combo to skillfully deflect incoming blows, even from things that look like potential bosses.
In contrast, is the much slower hammer weapon. This heavy maul is definitely much, much slower but has more potential for heavier damage. The Penitent One can even be seen swinging the mallet around in a whirlwind, giving off some quite impactful hits. Perhaps this will be the weapon of choice for those who want to knock back everything away from themselves.
The official Blasphemous 2 site does mention that we will have “several new weapons” to play with. This somewhat gives off the impression that we may have more to look forward to. Only time will tell.
An element that seemed missing from the official Blasphemous 2 announcement trailer was that it was missing the game’s signature gore. The trailer footage was uncannily bloodless by Blasphemous’ standards. However, some speculate that this may be due to the fact that it was showcased on Nintendo’s platform. A red band trailer or reveal may not be too far behind.
Blasphemous was quite known for its brutal combat, gratuitous amounts of blood, and general carnage. The game’s main website does confirm that “brutal executions” still exist, so that is promising.
Gothic imagery is also overflowing in the footage, and this is especially true for the enemies you will face. We will get to make use of our new weapons and skills to destroy these hideous creatures.
The first Blasphemous game followed the tale of The Penitent One, one of the sole survivors of a curse that wiped out many living beings. It is known for its punishing combat and platforming as well as its brutal execution or glory kill moves. Despite being a 2D pixel art side-scroller, the game was able to convey much unsettling imagery and violent gore. Due to the original game’s success, the developers no longer had to go through theKickstarterroute for the sequel.
