Bloodborne: Playstation Experience

They’re at it again. Sony has released another look at Bloodborne during the Playstation Experience event in Las Vegas.  Highlighting cooperative play, there’s lots of new and fun things to gawk at this time.  Lightning weapons coming back?

ThePlaystation blogcalls this Hunter enemy “Gascoigne” as well as hinting that players at the experience event will see new gameplay feature revealed.  We’ll update if we find out more.

Great insight here. It seems like mastering weapons in Bloodborne will be very different while being similar. It sounds like this is a next level of weapon mastery. I’m psyched if that’s the implication.

As far as weapons go, I’m hoping for a greatsword that splits into two other swords. Sort of like the… Northern Regalia.

That certainly seemed viable in the Alpha. I mainly broke out the sword to try to adapt to the faster speed but I relied on the ludicrously effective crushing blows from the hammer most of the time.

One thing the videos don’t capture for players like me (so if you’re like me pay attention) is how FRUSTRATING the combat is after three Souls games. There’s a few button swaps, nothing too crazy. The mechanics are clearly built on the same engine/premise. In other words, in isolation (as in no enemies to worry about) you’d immediately feel at home. The first thing I did on loading was to swing my hammer and sword around and get sorta used to the controls. I was very comfortable.

Until I started fighting. It’s hard to explain but the best summary is that the philosophy of combat is what changed the most.

I think Souls games allow for a faster play style and many people who leaned toward that will have no trouble transitioning.

So why is this long tangent on here?

That video shows three very different main weapons in use as well as different secondary weapons at work. While the Alpha frustrated me a great deal, I can assure veterans of the series that it’s the kind of frustration we got hooked on in the first place. The kind that DSII lacked because of being too similar to Dark and Demon’s. If they hadn’t nerfed the great scythe moveset it was surefire I would have gone right back to that. Since they did I ended up with a sword, my go to for Demon’s. It was easy to be comfortable and get into a groove.

With Bloodborne, I know I like the hammer already but I also know that I’m in for a major reality check that will lead to me having to adapt a great deal. Which weapon will end up being my favorite? Who knows. And that’s why I’m excited.

That’s the part that annoys me, that to use the hammer you need to hook it to a puny sword. As far as I go I’ll never use that puny sword and will keep the hammer form 100% of the time.

I’m usually a sword guy actually. I have not found anything yet that I like more than the Drangleic sword and Bastard sword in DSII. And I’ve tried a LOT of weapons.

The Kirkhammer in Bloodborne though works perfectly for me to slow the combat down (sorta) as I admit I had trouble adapting to the pace and lack of shields. I know lots of players talk about “feel” and “weight” of weapons and this one has both in spades.

And for even better news, this particular hammer also happens to be a puny sword. The difference in the forms of the weapon is drastic and very difficult to get used to (for me at least). However, slicing a fool up and reaching behind with the off hand to bring a stone that weighs about as much as a car into the fray is intensely rewarding.

I told my Demon’s/Dark Souls friends that if this game didn’t have hammers I wasn’t going to buy it.Including hammers IS the reason I’m hyped for it.

Ever since the Bramd, I’ve never gone back to any puny sword

That was my weapon of choice in the Alpha. That thing is straight up amazing feeling.

Looks amazing, can’t wait to bury that hammer on every single monster I see

There are a few things I took away from that demo (particularly the Chalice dungeon):

The way the shoulder cover on the black hunter’s jacket billowed when he opened the doors to the boss. His jacket actually BILLOWED from the wind coming out of the boss arena. WHAT?!?! That level of detail is astounding.

Seems like you can swift dodge to the left and right. Seems pretty handy.

You don’t seem to get stunlocked nearly as badly as in Souls games. Praise the sun!

You can share the Chalice dungeon with your friends. For the first time since Demon’s Souls you can actually invite your friends to play with you.

Still no mention of a Souls/monetary system, or how customization/upgrades will work. I’m sure its in there, but they won’t say anything about it just yet.

Each new piece of footage that comes out gets me super excited, though. I was very on the fence earlier, but now I’m really starting to get on board the hype train!

But will there be different backstab animations!? ;( Don’t know why but it’s really been bothering me. Anyone know if it’s simply just the fist animation for good?

oh boy….I cannot wait to measure my skill against those enemies….this beast moves so fast….the fight is so furious…and gore !

this will be so much faster than souls….I am uber pumped!

Interesting about the shadows! Wonder what the deal is. About the style: I thought the same thing! I did LOVE trickster style so it’s def something very promising, although I expect the controls to have a bit more weight than devil may cry did – if nothing else because the environments are more cluttered and a responsiveness of the caliber of dmc3 would likely cause me to get stuck everywhere lol.

Goodness, that boss is beastly.

The lightning effect on the player’s weapon definitely wasn’t there before. I’m guessing it’s from a resin-like item.

To me, it highly resembles DMC3 combat in trickster modeLooks very promising, however the character’s shadow was missing the whole time, dunno if that’s just alpha thing – take a closer look, lightning is there but lots of shadows are missing.

Sweet jeebus, that gameplay looks extremely dynamic. For a while now I’ve tried to picture in my head what the new emphasis on movement over blocking would look like, and that video really puts it into perspective. I just learned that one of my old friends is picking up a PS4 to play this as well, so I now have an even bigger reason to pick up a copy and a console.

Pyro in a can! Now at your local druggist’s

O…M…G…

So fecking hyped!! It just looks better an better!

Omagad! That looks awesome. The levels are being polished so well and it shows, game has made a lot of progress since June!!

Loved seeing the flamethrower and the armor variation. Praise it!
