Born of Bread is a Loafly Story About a Bread Golem and His Friends
Born of Bread is an upcoming turn-based RPG that features a load of bread and his merry friends (who aren’t pastries).
Let’s see how many bread-based puns we can fit in here, shall we? The upcoming slice-of-life RPG, Born of Bread, just got a dough-lightful full feature over on the official PlayStation Blog. There, the bakers WildArt Studio goes wild with his ideas and concepts that surround their upcoming breadwinner.
Let’s see if this adventure is as breadth-taking as it looks!
Born of Bread features a doughy bread golem named Loaf, who has risen to the occasion to thwart being from different times. Loaf is a slice of childlike wonder who has some odd doughy abilities, to say the least.
Each of these characters is beautifully drawn and is charming in their own right. This unlikelybun-ch will engage in so many naan-stop adventures together. They will help Loaf in different ways, even outside of combat.
Born of Bread takes a page out of Paper Mario andSea of Starsin the sense that its combat system requires a bit more active participation from the player. Its turn-based fights will require players to engage in minigames whenever certain actions occur, instead of merely selecting an attack from the menu.
For example, using Lint’s tail to whiplash foes will require the player to press a button the moment an on-screen indicator reaches a certain section. Succeeding at the proper timing will grant you bonus damage, but failure will have no negative consequences whatsoever (except maybe a bruised ego). Other minigames will include button mashing for Loaf’s “Roast” ability. This makes you toast our hero so that he becomes burnt and a bit carcinogenic, which essentially grants him damage immunity for a short period.
Being active in Born of Bread is not limited to offense. Players with impeccable timing can reduce the damage taken by the party when they press the X (or A, if on an Xbox controller) button at the moment the enemy hits them.
Another nice feature of Born of Bread is that it has a mechanic called the “Battle Broadcast”. The feature lets you become a streamer care of your small dragon friend named Dub. He will use his little laptop to breadcast your fights, showing off your skills to the various NPCs you’ve encountered throughout your travels. Just like on Twitch, there will be an active chat commenting on your skills (or lack thereof). More viewers will also mean more rewards.
The world of Born of Bread will be taking place in a beautifully rendered soft 3D background. Our 2D characters pop out of the environments, essentially giving them center stage. However, areas themselves will have a lot of character and will have many facets when it comes to exploring them.
Colorfuland detailed background will be ripe and full of secrets and yeast-er eggs. Loaf and company can collect various food items that will help them, like apples, chocolate cakes, and croissants. The developers do warn that we shouldn’t dwell on why Loaf would eat other pastries, but their pointing it out invites more questions.
Born of Bread is a lighthearted and beautifully drawn 2.5D turn-based RPG. Its most obvious inspiration is the Paper Mario games, as it also follows the “flat” and “paper” aesthetic from those games.
