Chrono Odyssey Gameplay Preview – MMORPG In UE5

Developer NPIXEL just unveiled an almost 4-minute-long gameplay trailer for their upcoming game, Chrono Odyssey. The footage contained in-engine footage or the game’s environments, characters, enemies, and combat.

Chrono Odyssey’s gameplay trailer started off with a montage of various areas of the game. We get to see some extremely detailed environments, ranging from lush foresty forests to bustling cityscapes, or even dark and dingy dungeons. Areas are adorned with various structures like forgotten temples, or holy cathedrals.

Viewers also get treated to a highly detailed field of grass that sways in the wind. The majority of the footage looks to be in-game and not some pre-rendered cutscene, though it is quite hard to tell what is actual “gameplay”. Chrono Odyssey’s visual fidelity is the star of the show here, and the quality of this is jaw-dropping, to say the least.

The lighting looks gorgeous as well, creating many different “feels” of the environment. But looks aside, let’s talk about the big meat of the game: combat.

The game looks to have your standard set of high fantasy heroes. Some of the classes identified look like Swordsman, Paladin, Dual-Wielding Berserker, Ranger, Assassin, as well as your all-purpose Sorcerer. As such, it will feature a healthy mix of melee, ranged, and magic.

One key thing here is that Chrono Odyssey’s combat looks to be quite heavy and impactful. You can see, hear, and feel the difference that light attacks from, say a longsword, do compared to some heavier hits. We see a skill similar to Diablo IV’s Barbarian’s Upheaval where the character literally rips chunks of the earth out of the ground and violently flings them at foes.

A magic user on the other hand makes use of Freeze spells that turn enemies into crystal dust upon shattering. Funnily enough, enemies are stuck in place, wherever they may be – even if that “where” is in the air.

The more roguish of characters might prefer to hold a dagger in each hand, or perhaps make use of double sabers. In essence, Chrono Odyssey’s dual-wielding combat looks to be quite a quick and dizzying affair. It looks very entertaining watching a character becoming a literal flurry of hits. Some classes also seem to have the option of quickly swapping weapons. One character switches from her daggers to a flintlock rifle that she uses with deadly precision.

In terms of boss encounters, it looks like Chrono Odyssey will be doling these out in spades. There are some extremely massive beasts that look like some of the targets of the game’s boss battles. They are screen-filling and will take a whole group of heroes to take down. It doesn’t look like the game has a “Holy Trinity” system that most MMOs have, so knowing how to approach these encounters will be an interesting affair.

An enemy that looks eerily similar to Diablo from Diablo 2 also makes his appearance (though in a stylish jet black). The muscular beast takes some massive swipes and jabs at the player party, throwing rocks and debris around with every hit.

Even further, there are even larger bosses, such as dragons, that will take dozens of players in order to slay. The combat looks extremely epic with all the players running around, trying their best to avoid lunar flames from the enemies’ breath attacks.

Hopefully, these fights will play as epic as the gameplay trailers look. It would be disappointing if these encounters would be relegated to just DPS races against bullet sponge enemies.

Chrono Odyssey’s “Chrono” mechanic looks like it will come in the form of some time-altering abilities. You can freeze time at some points in combat, literally freezing everything in place. Players can then proceed to cut their foes to shreds.

Alternatively, you can rewind time on yourself, moving back a few seconds. Extremely helpful when you find yourself overwhelmed by enemies, or if you just “accidentally” fall off a ledge. We also get to see one scene where instead of stopping time entirely, the world’s pace slows down to a crawl. Another instance of time manipulation is when a player character archer dies in combat, only to have the scene rewind and have her get back up again.

Hopefully, we get to see more of Chrono Odyssey very soon. We’re particularly interested in seeing the game’s actual systems, such as questing, and itemization, as well as the finer sides of combat. The game will be released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, we just don’t know when yet. Check back later for more Chrono Odyssey updates!
