Clockwork Revolution Brings Us a Time-Bending Steampunk RPG
Clockwork Revolution is a newly announced Steampunk RPG from the minds behind the Wasteland games and Torment: Tides of Numenera.
The game is being developed by inXile Entertainment, best known for its isometric RPG experiences and extraordinary world-building.
Clockwork Revolution takes place in the enchanting Victorian-era metropolis of Avalon, a loving city where steam-powered marvels coexist with societal divides. Picture steam trains soaring through the air, wealthy industrialists adorning themselves with intricate clockwork prosthetics, and mechanical servants attending to their masters’ every need. You can even see someone running atop a red carpet machine, ensuring that the user is always walking on the very best surface possible. Talk about extreme grandeur.
At a glance, this seems like the perfect utopia just like in Bioshock Infinite. However, behind this facade of wonder and progress lies a dark secret.
Lady Ironwood, a ruthless figure, has manipulated the city’s history using time travel. By altering key events, she has ensured the perpetual struggle of the working class while amassing immense wealth and power for herself. As the protagonist, you stumble upon this grand scheme and take it upon yourself to bring about a revolution, liberating Avalon from Lady Ironwood’s grip.
Everything shown off so far in the reveal trailer during the Xbox showcase didn’t particularly boast any RPG elements. It was mostly things to set up the story, as well as showing off the game’s gunplay and jaw-dropping vistas.
The combat in Clockwork Revolution is dynamic and exhilarating. Players will engage in various combat scenarios infused with time-bending mechanics. They can utilize an array of steampunk-inspired weapons, gadgets, and abilities to overcome their foes and Lady Ironwood’s henchmen. Your skills and strategic choices in combat will determine the outcome of conflicts and shape the revolution.
As you delve into the depths of the city, you will wield the power of the Chronometer, a wondrous device that allows you to travel back in time. Using the Chronometer, you can choose specific moments in Avalon’s history to influence and alter. Your decisions during these time-traveling journeys have far-reaching consequences, causing the world, its citizens, and their stories to evolve in unexpected ways. The choices you make in the past ripple through time, affecting the present and future of Avalon.
More interesting, the Chronomancer looks like it will have tons of combat potential. Enemies can be frozen in time, unable to act while you fill their bellies with lead. You can reverse time on various environmental hazards, having foes be pulled into huge fans, destroying what little there was, to begin with. You can even rewind time once you’re strong enough, rebuilding collapsed bridges and other structures to open up avenues for exploration.
Clockwork Revolution represents a significant milestone for inXile. It is their first AAA first-person action RPG developed under Xbox Game Studios. They are leveraging the resources and support of Microsoft to deliver a truly ambitious project. While the game is still in early development, the team is committed to pushing the boundaries of roleplaying reactivity and infusing the game with the distinct charm and personality that players have come to expect from inXile’s titles. There is currently no release date for the title except “in due time”.
inXile Entertainment is a renowned studio with a passion for creating immersive RPG experiences. Led by Game Director Chad Moore and Principal Designer Jason Anderson, who played pivotal roles in the creation of the acclaimed steampunk RPG Arcanum, they are no strangers to this setting. inXile has a rich history of delivering captivating worlds and deep gameplay systems. But this seems to be their first foray into changing to the first-person perspective entirely.
Previously, inXile Entertainment has delighted players with tactical and isometric games. One example is Wasteland 3, a post-apocalyptic RPG with a strong emphasis on player choice and consequences. Their titles are known for their intricate storytelling, robust character customization, and engaging combat mechanics.
