Crimson Desert New Open World Gameplay Trailer is Nuts

The game which is by the same studio behind the MMORPG Black Desert, veers away from the mass multiplayer experience and goes for a single-player RPG this time around. When Crimson Desert was first introduced, it seemed to be anMMORPG spinoffofBlack Desert Online, however, now the focus is on action, combat and exploration. There also seem to be some quieter ways to spend your time fishing as well as fulfilling some requests such as delivering sheep or simply taking the time to pet a cat.

The trailer is dense, and if you blink you might miss a key feature. But here are some of the many gameplay features Crimson Desert will be gaining. While the video is marked as a work in progress, we see combat right off the bat, your standard sword and shield. However, things start to get interesting with arm wrestling at your local tavern. I hope this is a way to handle disputes, because why not challenge an opponent to an arm wrestle and some mead to handle diplomatic matters?

Swinging back into the combat, literally. Our lone mercenary is shown kicking up a fuss, tripping up enemies and slamming the ground knocking back a group of foes. There is even a look at what looks to be finishers, with tapping the button during a slow-mo moment to choose an action to knock back an enemy with a forceful kick.

Combat isn’t limited to on foot. Horseback shows bow and arrow aiming. But between brawls, players can marvel at the scenery and travel upon mount to different areas.

You can also answer the call of the locals in Pywel through a small job board, by helping with odd jobs such as delivering a sheep by picking it up and carrying it. Reuniting the poor lamb with its flocks and a boy who looks thrilled to have it back. Whether this is the only means of transporting the probably very confused sheep back to its owner isn’t shown.

But if playing a pacifist in the village life doesn’t take your fancy you can steal a horse and cart by brutally kicking off its driver. The carts do remind me of the way you travel through Black Desert, but this looks like a harsh way to GTA yourself some transportation. Whether the bounty system is similar to the likes of the Elder Scrolls Online orCyberpunk 2077, isn’t known. But we do see a “crime” status pop up when the mercenary is attacking.

But it’s not all thievery in this medieval fantasy. Crimson Desert also has a more laidback side to it with fishing, foraging for food and even cuddling with a cat, aww. Exploration takes things to new heights with hot air ballooning. Seeing the world from above is a great way to pinpoint areas of interest. Also spotted are some floating objects in the background.

Floating islands shown later giveZelda Tears of the Kingdomvibes as free falling from a great height is also an option. Taking a leaf out of Assassin’s Creed, scaling walls means ways to explore a second-story building is also an option.

Turning to the more fantasy side of things, the character is seen stepping into a portal of sorts. These could be dungeons or puzzles to solve. There are even abilities to help open heavy doors and unlock some sort of shrine. Leaping off horses or cliffs doesn’t have to end in death, as the warrior quickly uses an ability to disintegrate a little and fly through the air. We also get a glimpse of some major foes, and even what looks to be a spinning machine of death waiting to blast you into oblivion. Could be a fun fight especially armed with Crimson’s fast-paced combat.

Crimson Desert looks to have a culmination of RPG influences even from Black Desert such as taming wild horses but with a different system this time. I’m looking forward to seeing what other elements and mechanics are in store for players as this has already scarfed down a number of inspirations. Although I hope they aren’t spreading themselves too thin, as it’s better to have fleshed-out systems than half-baked.

The scope seems quite ambitious, and I can see why they’ve taken time before showing more of Crimson Desert after going back to the drawing board since switching from an MMO to a solo experience. Taking their time to add some exciting core features. One thing Pearl Abyss are always great at is providing stunning visuals and extremely detailed character models. Its fantasy medieval setting and strange portals also call to mindDragon’s Dogmabut without thePawnsto party up with.
