Dark Souls 3: 10 Things You Might Not Know

Ipondered a bit about what to write about Dark Souls 3 after seeing it in Tokyo. Leaked footage is all over the internet, most of the information from the new build is currently known because of the event several days ago (we were right about Magic in the next build by the way). There isn’t any leaked footage here or pics taken when Sony wasn’t looking, but what can be found in this article is cold hard information, most of which came straight from Bandai Namco PR. I lucked out and got some time with them and asked all sorts of questions, and they were extremely helpful.

There are 2 new Classes from which you can chooseAcademy AssassinandHerald of White. For all intents and purposes these would be your Mage and Cleric builds. The Academy Assassin comes with aStaff,Buckler,Spearand a three-corned hat that looks straight out of Bloodborne. The 3 Sorceries you get areSoul Arrow,Soul Greatsword&Soul Darts. Soul Darts being the new one here and is a rapid succession of small projectiles. The Spear’s Skill (L2) is a charge forward, rapidly striking the target with 5 successive hits. It was seriously deadly!

The Herald of White comes with aKite Shield,MaceandTalismanfor castingMiracles. The 3 Miracles you get areLightning Spear,HealandSacred Oath. I was told that the Mace’s Skill was the same as theHand Axeby the Namco PR Rep, but I am not sure that is correct as they don’t look the same visually to me.

I’ll be sending in some more questions soon. Please feel free to post things you would like asked (within reason!) in the comments. We have at least one more day at TGS, so we can still get them done 🙂

In the meantime, enjoy the official gameplay footage from Namco:

Ah yes, the Solaire Mug. Just what you need to Praise the Sun every morning.

But wait order one estus and you get another one free! That’s a 3000 soul value absolutely free! But, if you call in the next 15 minutes you get a Capra Demon action figure with dual machete action! That’s two estus flasks, a Capra Demon, and a Solaire Mug. When you order two estus. Good for family gatherings, dungeon hoarding, and mistime heals that cause you to die in PvP!

I’m curious to know if there’s been any information on how exactly we acquire more Estus/Ash Flasks. Whether it will be in the style of DS1 or DS2, and if its the latter would there be seperate Shard types, or would there be just a finite amount of a singular ‘Flask Shard’ type that makes the player choose which they want to upgrade.

It’s true that this set is very bloodbornish. Why i think people says it’s like bloodborne:1. It’s faster. Yes, it’s true but remember that for the moment we only see the fast roll because there wasn’t equipload in the demo.2. The aesthetic and atmosphere. For the moment we only see a huge castle, that it’s the type of ambient that most reassembles bloodborne. It’s true that it’s more gothic than other souls games and there are elements from bloodborne, after all some artist designers worked in both projects, but I’m sure, seeing the map from the collector’s edition, that we will see a lot of other atmospheres apart from a gothic city. Moreover, the dense atmosphere and the great number of details remind bloodborne because is the first game only next-gen and use techniques like sympligon that other souls games could not use.

In my opinion, the game is more like DS1 than any other game of the series, especially for all the mechanics we’ve seen since now.

What disappoints me is that it looks so much like Dark Souls 1, animations, weapons, spells and the like. I really don’t see ant difference in this game from that of a light build in Dark Souls 1. the enemies on the other hand do look and act like Bloodborne with Dark Souls mixed in. Fast, aggressive, varying moves. That I like.

I think Bloodborne could use some heavy armor. Not stuff like Dark Souls obviously, but something like chainmail or light plates that slow you down a little bit and increases stamina usage for dodging and sprinting, but offers better resistance. You’re still fast, but you can’t dodge and run as much because you tire faster, but you can take more hits and make use of the regen mechanic with some heavy weapons.

Looks way more like Dark Souls, to me. That particular outfit looks straight out of Bloodborne, and it’s a little faster, but that’s about it. There’s no regen from getting hits after being hit, he’s using a sheild and magic effectively, there’s no sidestep, and no trick weapons. All of that is vastly different from what made Bloodborne what it is, and otherwise Bloodborne was much like Dark Souls in a different setting. Don’t forget that we haven’t really seen how medium and heavy armor characters move in this game yet.

WOW It looks like a Bloodborne, Part 2…. I am actually a bit disappointed seeing this video because this does not look like Dark Souls at all. Guess that’s what we are getting. Bloodborne 2.

Just signed up for the Beta

Wow, they sure like to change the game, now Estus Ash- sounds interesting.

So as for PvP (since that’s what I play for years after release), i wonder if Magic might be worth it now… I think they really need more spells like that (sound like) Soul Dart to make magic worthwhile in PvP. Am I right to say almost all spells are pretty much easy to dodge? A similar tree of spells such as Soul Arrows, for example, increases in speed as they get stronger yet they are basically the same speed overall. I think it would be great to have super slow and super fast spells to keep players on their toes and make mistakes trying to dodge them. Same speed casting animation so it disguises the actual spell being cast.

About skills and magic using the same bat i think it’s a good idea, give more tactical options, but perhaps hibrid builds will have more problems deciding if they use the points for weapon arts or magic.

I think that the balance could make this a great idea or a nightmare.

I would like to know if the skills bar will have one special stat for it or will be a combination of various stats.

I watched a recent gameplay video, and it seems they’re going to use the magic bar for both spells and arts. the video showed a knight with a greatsword do an upwards slash attack, and it used about a quarter of the magic bar.

so magic and melee weapon skills are consolidated? That is strange.. perhaps a translation-misnomer?

And is the ‘comming soon’ below the greyed-out “apply here” indicating that the ability to “apply here” is comming soon or that the actual stress test will be comming soon for those who were quick enough to apply?

Will we be seeing any armor from previous games? Specifically Catarina armor. I love it so

Great article Cas!

I followed the link to the sign up for the stress test, but I decided not to enter the lottery. I’m on the fence about whether it would be better for me to play a demo version early and not be able to talk about it, or just wait until the game releases and get to speculate with everyone else in the meanwhile. I’ve decided not to join the lottery, that way someone who really wants to take part has a better chance and that way I don’t have to be silent for six months.

The Ash Flask sounds like a good decision to me. It will mean that replenishing magic will be more restricted like healing. If they had gone the full DeS route with spice then casters could have near infinite casts (and with heal spells infinite near infinite healing).

Double fisted drinking FTW?

EDIT: I almost forgot… Tricorn hats sound awesome! If that is in fact a Solaire style bucket helm in the BB DLC trailer, then we have even more cross game costume opportunities!

Or they got bored of the old hp healing estus and now they want a different flavor

So we are going to have 2 flasks now? I guess our Undead is so hollowed they want to drown their sorrows.

All In all, it is an interesting way for From to return to their roots in Demon’s Souls.

Fuck Hexes.

Rad – so you can interrupt an invader’s refill of their MP to stab-stab-stab-stab-stab with a spear. Excellent.

It does not say there will be no hexes it just says that they haven’t seen any yet, they will likely be added later.

no hexes D: Why?It was a cool new feature respect to DS1!

That ash estus idea sound very good to me, let’s just hope that they will balance it right.
