Dark Souls 3 Guide: Multiplayer details revealed
Hello everyone and welcome to our Dark Souls III how-to-network-test thread!
TheControls pageon the wiki has full details on what the controls are. Please note that the official image is showing X and Circle buttons on the traditional Japanese layout. This is likely an oversight from Namco and controls will (most likely) be the normal layout on EU and US.
TheNew Player Helpexplains the basics of combat, lock on, etcSeeCombatfor specifics on mechanics such as kickingSee theSkills pagefor the newly introduced Battle Skills (previously known as Weapon Arts). These may consume your Magic/Mana Gauge!
You can only invade people who are in a co-op session!
Lord of CinderIn order to summon other players, you must use anEmberto obtain the power of theLord of Cinder. Using anEmberallows you to become a multiplayer host. When inLord of Cindermode, your character’s appearance will change, and you’ll have the following effects until you die:
Note:If you’re summoned by another player while inLord of Cindermode, your maximum HP will go back to normal.

I think there’s info missing there, and this is a marketing/translation oversight.
My suspicion is that there is a special co-op mode that is triggered via a special item which eliminates pvp. Otherwise this is a network test only condition for whatever reason.
Either way I don’t expect this to be the case for the proper game.
On one hand, I don’t care if other people can co-op with four people. I never co-op, except on certain bosses if I’m having a really tough time, or am crunched for time and need to get it done quick. Invading gank squads isn’t often fun either.
On the other hand, if it becomes popular to co-op at all times to eliminate the potential for PvP, then that would really suck. Though as Fex points out, we don’t know if this is just a network test restriction or not. It may be their way of “balancing” the Red Eye Orb: since it has unlimited uses, it gives PvE’ers a way out while still playing online. Not a good way of balancing it IMO, but we will know more tomorrow, eh?
Also, invading someone’s world (and being invaded yourself) is one of the major appeals of Dark Souls IMO. It captures the feel of older, open-world free PvP MMOs, where you never know if you’ll be attacked, and that uncertainty (and the spontaneous combat it creates, and the organic narratives of rivalry and triumph/defeat it creates) is very fun, and something missing from most modern games.
EDIT: Also, this Lord of Cinder mode sounds too similar to the HP penalty for invadrs in Bloodborne, which was a huge pain in the ass. Giving the host 1.4x HP sounds like a huge bonus for them, though if the invader can heal it does counterbalance it somewhat.
2nd EDIT: Having never played Demon Souls, I’m hearing this is similar to the system from Demon Souls. Confirm/deny anyone? Im talking about the Lord of Cinder system, where by you gain 1.4x hp, but are open to invasions. Also, do invaders in Lord of Cinder mode gain the hp bonus as well? Because that would be fine.
That’s a fair point, but it seems a bit odd. Sure they might limit stuff, but if its a network test wouldn’t they want to test how well the multiplayer works across the network.
On another point, from the sounds of it it seems the “Lord of Cinder Mode” is what Body Form was for Demon Souls. You can play through the game with never being able to summon co-op or being invaded, or you can switch to a mode where you can summon players and in turn be invaded by others. Seems to fit right in with the fact the LoC effects dissappear upon death.
yeah well the end of ganking is not excatly sad news anyway.
I personally never enjoyed invading and wrecking someone’s game and I always preferred the organized, duel oriented PvP.
now…if there is no arena from day one in the final game, I shall be very very disappointed !
I hope so :c
The online stuff says that there’s up to 6 player multiplayer. So how can this be if you can’t co-op and PvP at the same time, and there’s no arena?
We must assume that the network test has limitations, or that covenants or items will have an effect.
Do not go hollow just yet
I feel like someone stabbed me in the heart
Oh well :/
….. I sorta enjoyed fighting gankers
Is this news coming strictly from the Network Test parameters or was it announced that this is how it will be in the final version?
Basically, is it possible this will change?
Hmmm when I think about the recurring clashes between PVP-ers and PVE-ers, maybe it’s for the best… From my experience the PVP community (which I’m supposedly part of) seems to cause more problems (whine, point fingers, clash, etc) than anything.Nevertheless, this is a dramatic change in the “souls phylosophy”. Makes me wonder if this change will occur because the developers do listen to the communities (it’s such a mess that I feel compelled to use plural here. Gone are the days where the community used to be one… sigh). With the multiple simultaneous invasions thing, pretty sure gank spank will still be a thing though (and trolling of course…). I sense a new forest covenant coming our way :p
The fact that nobody liked the invasion system in bloodborne and that almost EVERYONE plays in nightmare of mensis is enough of a hint for fromsoft. The fact that people can’t invade coopers is good for most people, but not those lookin for a challenge and being badass in a 3v1 video. Though I think it’s a change for the better.
I don’t intend to summon at all if I can help it, and I barely do multiplayer in general, but I still don’t like that. I thought the whole reason invading existed was to keep it from being too easy with co-op. This is a complete 180 from Bloodborne even, where in most areas you HAD to use co-op to allow invasions.
I doubt the embers would be limited – it just sounds like this game’s version of humanity.
@Praise-the-sun I doubt this was for casualization. In fact, they said dark souls 3 will be theHARDESTin the series. And judging by the footage, it’ll be pretty hard. The one thing I’m shaky about is 4 player coop. The enemies BETTER be noticeably stronger as more people join. Overall, I think these features are awesome. also while in lord of cinders mode it says one of the effects is “•Icons next to gauges change“? What does that mean exactly?
I agree. The majority just play PvE.
Oh well I was bad in 3vs1 anyways lol.

some new screens and stuff :3
Dont be fooled. This desision was not due to people being sick of getting ”ganked” when invading hosts, no this was done to please the people that just wanted to play through the game in easy mode.Key word: Easy
This is the casualization of the soul series! Mark my word for it!!!In started at ds2 and will never end, because we’re the minority. So its in no ones place to complain about it, if you dont like this then tough, because thats what Souls is turnig into now. The Devs always tend to the bigger audience, dark souls 1 fans unfortunetly are not a part of that audience.
From my initial thinking, it seems almost like you can pick up a specific Ember at some point and if you choose to use it, it then toggles that character as a “Multiplayer Host”, meaning from then on you can summon, but you can choose to not use it and continue on without any multiplayer interaction.
After second Dark I find no interest in this really. It’s strengthened by footage that recycle way too much from original Bloodborne piece. Together with all fancy shining, no weight armor, gravity free super fast movement and most likely respecting, what storywise happened in second game. Naaah—I’d rather drown myself in fantasizing about potential world, story and what I would like to see in hypothetical Cyber Souls.
Are there enough LoC Embers in the game? Do we have to buy them or do we have to farm them?
4 player co op! Those better be some tough bosses…
Cas
Eh at least it will stop all the whining about gankers.
We have now confirmed that invasions happen ONLY when in co-op mode. Namco had mistranslated the guide content xD
I can’t get my head around the no invasions while co-op. This is madness~~~! We’ll only have all red fightclubs and all red pvp events? Here’s hoping for an arena!
