Darkest Dungeon 2 Adds Yet Another Fan-Favorite Hero, Though He Doesn’t Look so Good
Darkest Dungeon 2 reintroduces a Hero from the previous game, the Flagellant. They look like they’ve seen better days.
The developers at Red Hook Studios are all speed ahead in time for the full release ofDarkest Dungeon 2 on May 8. In celebration, they’ve decided to unveil the 12thheroof the game: the Flagellant. He may not be a stranger to the darkness and stress, as the Flagellant was originally introduced in the first game via the Crimson Court DLC.
However, it looks like the Flagellant’s self-inflicted suffering has gone abiiiiittoo far.
The Flagellant returns to ourstagecoach, joining the player and their party yet again on a troubled adventure. The developers didn’t reveal what level we can unlock this pain-loving warrior, but he does bring a lot to the table.
What’s immediately noticeable about the Flagellant in Darkest Dungeon 2 is that he seems to be missing all his flesh. He is no longer a man on a hell-bent mission that thrives on self-destruction. Instead, he is now a seemingly undead skeleton that walks around in the Flagellant’s robes.
The Flagellant still thrives on taking as much punishment as possible. Like his skin-full counterpart, the hero is at his best when he’s at his worst. Hisattacks and skilltend to harm himself in the process while dealing damage toenemiesor even healing the rest of his party. The Flagellant also operates best when knocking at Death’s Door, which is basically a dice roll whenever you reach criticalHP. He can gain various buffs while in this state, but will always be on the precipice of death. Flagellants can even take hits intended for other people, which allows them to reachDeath’s Doorfaster.
Two main things will come to mind with Darkest Dungeon 2’s Flagellant: Blight and Stress. First and foremost, the Flagellant no longer deals bleeding DoTs to his foes. Instead, he will spread Blight all around, probably from the various toxins that killed his flesh in the first place. His kit will thus revolve around Blight.
An exclusive that Red Hook Games had with PC Gamer revealed a ton of his abilities. He has simple things like Punish which is a general physical and Blight damage dealer. The Flagellant can even Endure by relieving stress from someone else and redirecting it at himself. Flagellating himself will cast Lash’s Gift which buff’s an ally (for some reason). Even worse, Sepsis will deal tons of Blight damage all around while also saving the Flagellant from his wounds.
One stressful thing though is that having the Flagellant in your party will give Death herself a chance to wreak havoc on your journey. It looks like the Flagellant has cheated Death quite often, invoking her ire. Death herself will be aminibossthat can potentially trigger after everycombatencounter that the Flagellant walks out of. This will be a constant source of stress, more likely for the player, rather than our heroes.
The Flagellant joins Darkest Dungeon 2’s other heroes. Before him came theVestal, another fan favorite focused on healing and recovery. We also have classes such as theBounty Hunter,Grave Robber,Hellion,Highwayman,Jester,Leper,Man-at-Arms,Occultist, andPlague Doctor. Darkest Dungeon 2 has the exclusive fire-basedRunaway.
Some fans may be disappointed that the sequel still hasn’t mentioned adding the Crusader. We still can’t build “The Usual Suspects” party into Darkest Dungeon 2. It also isn’t clear just yet how the fanatical Flagellant will affect the game’s deep (though random)affinity system. How others would react to this walking corpse will be anyone’s guess as well at this point.
In other Darkest Dungeon 2 news, the developers released the “Redemption Road” update just last March 31. This was a substantial patch, as Red Hook introduced a lot of changes and features that were a direct result of community feedback.
Of course, there are tons and tons of balance tweaks in the update but there are more substantial additions. For example, the developers are adding what is called Routes which will make roads have a “type” such as safe, rough, hazardous, or an Oblivion Tear (the last one sounds extra nasty). Players can also get ambushed if their stagecoach gets damaged thanks to the newWheel and Armor Tokens.
To help balance this out, a new Pet system is also being introduced. 6 pets will have different effects on the StagecoachItems. Red Hook says that this is due to the attempt to make specific “Builds” for the coach that are tied to the pets and consumables. There will be 10 pets in total.
