Dauntless Details Their Behemoth Slaying Loot System

Developer Phoenix Labs has detailed how some of the loot system in their upcoming Online RPGDauntlesswill function for players. With Dauntless featuring Monster Hunter and MMO like elements, crafting and loot are going to be a large component of the gameplay when it releases for PC later this year.

Players will be teaming up to take down the massivebehemothsthat fill the landscape. When they slay one, they will be harvestingmaterialslike fangs, hard scales, thick fur and other materials. Similar to Monster Hunter, targeting specific areas on the beasts will result in specific rewards such as severing horns, cutting tails or chipping armor plates off.

Combined with these material components, you will also be harvesting something calledaetherwhich is an energy like substance that the beasts feed off from the land itself. You will kill the behemoth and capture their aether in a core, which will have a random element to its specific properties.

Once done you will bring your gathered components to anaethersmithwho will distill the aether into a mineral calledarchonitewhich contains the elemental and temperamental nature of the behemoth you’ve slain. This archonite gets applied to theweaponyou forge and further upgrading these new weapons will require more elemental archonite and perhaps from different behemoths depending on the characteristics of the weapon.

Players will be able to purchase temporary boosts which will impact the quantity of the materials that they gather from a hunt, which come in two tiers, Champion and Patron. When you activate Champion status, you will receive more materials when you slay a behemoth. When you activate Patron status, everyone in your party, regardless of their status, will receive more materials when you slay a behemoth. Additionally, this perk stacks so that the more slayers in your party who have Patron status, the greater the effect. Enabling Patron status will also give you a chance to discover cosmetic items dropped by behemoths, which other than Chroma Cores you purchase will be one of the only ways to obtain them.

Phoenix Labs was careful to stress that regardless of the boost purchased, none of them will be a substitute for skill on the battlefield and that players will have to earn everything they craft. An Alpha and Beta are in the works for this year leading up to release, you can sign up for themhere.

Interesting. I wonder how much pay to win that will turn out to be… Or are these status available from game achievements rather than just money?
