Dead Cells Celebrates Fellow Indie Game Stars in Crossover Events
Dead Cells teased fans with multiple crossover possibilities over the last couple of weeks. Here’s what has already been confirmed so far.
Motion Twin is just the gift that keeps on giving. Aside from providing players with hundreds of hours of playtime in the base game, the title has received some substantial DLC. More importantly, longtime fans have also been treated to tons of free updates that are either game-changing or just outright fun and silly.
This time around, Motion Twin just relishes in sharing the love in the Indie Space. The developers have already previously added the Knight fromHollow Knightand hissignature Nailas an indie crossover. Coming quite soon are a few more Indie friends to join the Beheaded.
Across the past couple of weeks, since October 27th to be precise, the Motion Twin Twitter account has been teasing folks about the upcoming additions. Each and every Tweet from the account related to the teases were also filled with puns.
The first alternate character announced would “deal damage in spades”. It is Yacht Club Games’ King Scepter from Shovel knight. This character from a fellow Roguelite can hop onto enemies’ heads and deal damage from above with his trusty shovel.
Next up is a character from a high-action platformer game, Katana Zero. Developer Askiisoft was kind enough to let Motion Twin add their star to Dead Cells. Due to the extra-heavy nature of Katana Zero, Subject Zero will feel right at home in Dead Cells.
Just like in his own game, Subject Zero will be able to perform some short “blink attacks” that will teleport him a short distance forward while striking down his foes. Also like his own game, throwing random objects at foes will also be quite the viable option.
Coming in from a totally different genre of game (but still a roguelite) is the Ironclad from Slay the Spire. To those unfamiliar with the title, instead of being a 2D Metroidvania Sidescroller, Slay the Spire is a Roguelite Deckbuilder. Players will choose their own adventure by selecting between various paths with icons to represent encounters.
The Ironclad will bring one of the trusty decks from Slay the Spire into Dead Cells. A unique skill will be added to the game that will regularly cycle between different card types. There will be 4 in total, and each will represent existing archetypes from the popular deck builder.
Now, coming from a more isometric top-down perspective is Jacket and his ever-reliable baseball bat from Hotline Miami. This ultra-violent combatant with a Chicken Head fits right in Dead Cells world, though he may not be used to the sidescrolling look.
Jacket’s attacks are fast and heavy at the same time, able to clobber hapless foes (and door) with ease. Nothing is safe when Jacket gets into melee range. He was also nice enough to bring his Damage Numbers style from Hotline Miami and import them into Dead Cells. How kind of him.
Although the (mostly) peaceful world and biomes of Terraria are quite the departure from Dead Cell’s roguelite world, their characters still found a way here. In a terrifying move from 2D Pixel Art into a completely different art style is Terraria’s default character.
The Terraria character brings with them the Starfury Sword, a melee weapon that triggers star shards to fall down from the heavens, crashing into foes.
And finally, last but not least is a guest star from Risk of Rain. This roguelite third-person shooter brings along its first and most basic playable character, the Commando. The Fishbowl-donning Commando is equipped with a Laser Glaive, a ranged weapon that seeks and pierces through enemies. It will deal more damage for each enemy hit after the first.
