Emergence

Editor at Fextralife. I look for the substantial in gaming and I try to connect video games to the emotions and stories they elicit. I love all things culture and history and have an odd fondness for the planet Jupiter. I think my dogs are pretty awesome too.

Haah… the release time is about eight-ish hours from now. Silly me, thinking I could get it right at midnight.

I don’t even sleep for eight hours, what is this.

I mostly agree. Diablo 3 had none of the atmosphere and understated depth that made Diablo 1 and 2 such an absorbing experience. To use one relevant example, Diablo 2’s Necromancer had an original cultural background all his own, something unique to the setting, and was very much a character in his own right. Diablo 3’s Witch Doctor was a by-the-book witch doctor, and was a caricature. (Though, admittedly, WD did end up being my favorite class, and not just for playstyle variety. Its lore might’ve been bog-standard, but it was sprawling, consistent with itself, and adequately written.)

It’s a recurring theme in D3. D2 had lots of original things unique to itself , and even the Paladin went through a lot of effort to not simply be a normal paladin but to have a story behind it (D1 was fairly standard dark fantasy roguelike fare, even if fun), while D3 spent half the time copying from D2 (understandable) and half the time copying from IRL (would be understandable, if the previous two games hadn’t gone through so much trouble to build such a unique setting). It’s just hard to think of the game as its own entity, and instead it just feels kind of… bog standard, I guess? Harder to get invested in it. I figured I might as well pick it up again just to see what they do to my old favorite class; it’ll either highlight what I don’t like about D3, or maybe it’ll make it fun to play instead of only being a blatant Skinner’s Box. Or, more realistically, I’ll enjoy about a month of dicking around with it before remembering that adding a self-contained chunk of content doesn’t do much to change the base, unmodified content you added it to.

I at least went in with a game plan, though: since the loot system is strongly biased towards your current character’s class and primary attributes, and the item stash is shared across all characters on the account, I figured that, assuming the Necro would be an Int class, then playing through with the two vanilla Int classes and amassing a big pile of Int-based loot would let me chomp through the Necro content as quickly and thoroughly as possible. I even have a bunch of King Leoric’s gear since it’s skelly/necro themed and might be nice to start out with.

Don’t have time to get into a new pc game, so the periodic Diablo 3 updates do it for me. I’ve actually bought the base game three times (launch pc, launch PS3 and launch PS4) so I would be lying if I didn’t say I think it is very good value and I enjoy it.

The thing I like the most about it is that I can be away for months and then be right back where I was and it feels natural. It’s a great couch coop experience that we can do when we are tired, so to me it works really well.

^D3 has a lot to do for a new playthrough, but Grim Dawn is just awesome in comparison. I love the cross-spec options.

Maybe you should take a look at Grim Dawn on Steam. Personally, I think it’s way better than Diablo and I like Diablo a fair bit. There’s far more depth to making your character, tons of secret areas of various sizes, side quests with various outcomes that depend on your choices, secret side quests, optional dungeons that open once per session so if you die that’s it for that session, and a faction system that lets you unlock cool gear, new quests and areas, and fight new enemies. Plus Grim Dawn is getting it’s own expansion some time this year with 2 more classes (One of which is a Necromancer) and a bunch of new areas with story.

Sorry if this is off topic, I just thought people who like the genre but didn’t like Diablo would be interested.

D3 is absolutely a repetitive game….except for the Campaign, the Adventure Mode is kinda boring BUT, if you like to deal massive damages, the game is not so bad….The only thing you have to do in Adventure mode is to upgrade you Paragon Point, upgrade your Legendary Gems and survive inside the Grater Rifts…..stop….Once you have a complete Set, this three things are the only thing you have to do in D3…This is my opinion and i’ve played for months with D3….sometimes i still play with it and this DLC will introduce new areas, new Legendaries and a new class BUT, the game will still remain boring, in the end…..Except for this, i still enjoy dealing billions of damages per hit….when you see 8.564.652.000 damage per hit on your screen it’s a satisfaction

finished diablo3 at release on PC awfully fast with a sorceress…did not manage to play with another character past the first boss because I found it so repetitive and boring.I bought it on PS4…but did not manage to play it past half the game as a monk.

this necromancer will never manage to make me turn the game on again…

When I think the stupid amount of time I spend playing diablo (the first) on LAN with friends….Diablo3 really did not thrilled me.

I think i’ll definitely go back to D3 in a few weeksDon’t know if i’ll buy the DLC though…..the Necromancer is very similar to the Witch Doctor so….i don’t know….anyway, as soon as i complete my second run on DAI i’ll go back to D3 for sure….i stil have to decide which char to choose between the 5 char i already developed in Adventure ModeThe last time i played with the Barbarian….this time i don’t know….Maybe the DH

I’m hyped!! I love going back to Diablo 3 periodically. Who wants to coop? (PS4)

They haven’t really said. I’m putting together something soon that will compile everything the patch adds when there’s more info.

I have a feeling these areas might be similar to the other added areas for pc and ps4/xb1 players that are in adventure mode.

Suddenly, release date. I didn’t think this one would be ready for a few months yet. The Shrouded Moors, Temple of the Firstborn, and Realms of Fate, do you know if these are these all a new area like Westmarch was? I’d hate to buy it and end up getting only a character.

Not that thrilled for the voice, and the dialogue is awfully corny, but that’s most of what I don’t like about D3 anyways.
