Digimon World Next Order Continues Resurgence of Game Series
Digimon Games Producers Kazumasa Habu and Takahiro Yokota announced on Twitter that the popular franchise will expand further. He has confirmed that there are numerous projects in the pipeline.
First up is that Digimon World: Next Order will also be ported to other systems. The title was initially only available only on PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4. Let’s first look into this one!
Digimon World: Next Order will have you raise and train Digimon to fight against other wild Digimon.
In this strategic RPG, your goal is to ultimately defeat the Machinedramon who is responsible for sending the Digital World into chaos. Doing so will restore balance and peace. The game is played in a third-person perspective where you are accompanied by two Digimon companions. At the start, you get to choose between Shiki or Takuto while picking from a list of 10 Digimon. What’s more, you can improve the relationship between your character and Digimon by feeding and praising them as well as offering gifts.
As you are traveling, you can initiate combat by coming into contact with hostile Digimon. A battle area will then appear. Note that your partner Digimon will be AI-controlled by default but you can definitely command its succeeding moves if you wish. It’s also possible to trigger a “special evolution”, which would merge both Digimon into one.
In Digimon World: Next Order, there are more than 200 Digimon to collect and build rapport with. Some notable friends are Agumon and his Digivolutions (Greymon, Metal Greymon, Wargreymon) and Gabumon and his evolutions (Garurumon, WereGarurumon, MetalGarurumon).
You will also meet other people as well as manage the Floatia, which serves as your base. Similar to management games, you will tend to the land, harvest crops, upgrade structures, and fully develop this town to turn it into a flourishing town.
Two new features will be introduced to this iteration of the well-received JRPG. First is the Beginner Mode Difficulty for those who prefer to focus on the story and have a more casual experience when it comes to combat. And second is having the ability to run, allowing you to travel faster.
Between Digimon World: New Order and Digimon Survive, the latter turn-based RPG features additional systems to keep players on their toes. Given that this title is heavy on the story, players can expect to make tough choices, which affects the paths they take.
There are three to consider, namely, “Moral”, “Harmony”, and “Wrathful”. Moral refers to the typical good alignment, harmony involves uniting your team despite the problems that pop up, and wrathful is the brash way of approaching circumstances regardless of whether or not it will affect anyone.
To make matters more interesting the karma you lean towards will also have an impact in combat encounters. For instance, you will be able to befriend them provided that you both exhibit the same alignment. Furthermore, the evolution path of your Digimon will equally be impacted. So if you were to become a more wrathful individual, then it will rub off on your Digimon companion, who will then turn harsh and brutal.
It remains to be seen how Digimon titles will evolve in the coming years against tough competitors like the Pokemon and Monster Hunter franchises. The popularity of Pokemon continues to go on an upward trend, especially after the release of Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Game Freak introduced more RPG elements into the game such as crafting consumables and gear together with the freedom to fully explore the world. It’s not revolutionary per se, but some of the features are enough to capture the attention of fans.
Similarly, Monster Hunter Rise has introduced the Wirebug and Palamute, allowing you to traverse higher grounds while traveling from one point to the next, respectively. These are indeed worthy additions to pull players back in.
As a fan of Digimon, I’m excited to see what the developers with Bandai Namco Entertainment come up with. Here’s hoping that they will integrate deeper RPG systems in place to revive the sentiment around the Digimon World! They’ve come a really long way since the original Digimon World game back on the PlayStation One.
