Disco Elysium “Successors’ In Development
Disco Elysiumhas two ‘successors’ in development by two different studios; Longdue and Dark Math Games are new studios with veterans from ZA/UM working on narrative RPGs that aim to continue the legacy of the acclaimed game.
Fans of Disco Elysium, considered one of the best games of the last five years, are familiar with the numerous issues at developer ZA/UM, which led to layoffs and the cancellation of a sequel. But all is not lost: the good news is that, coinciding with its fifth anniversary, some former developers are announcing spiritual sequels.
On one hand, we have the new indie studio Longdue, with some of the original creators of Disco Elysium, who have announced their intention to create an RPG that follows in the footsteps of Disco Elysium and raises the bar in the narrative cRPG genre.
“Longdue already has a dozen members, including team members who worked on the original Disco Elysium and its unpublished sequel. The team is also incorporating talent from across the industry, including veterans from Bungie, Rockstar, and Brave At Night,” they said in the official statement.
Longdue says it draws inspiration from the “creative energy” and legacy of Disco Elysium and other adventures. “At Longdue, we are inspired by decades of classic RPGs, from Ultima and Wizardry, through Fallout and Planescape, to the rightfully beloved Disco Elysium,” according to narrative director Grant Roberts.
“We’re excited to continue that legacy with another psychological RPG that prioritizes narrative, where the interaction between internal worlds and the environment is at the heart of the experience.”
This project will play with the conscious and subconscious, the visible and invisible, internal and external forces.
“The game features an innovative ‘psychogeographic RPG’ mechanic, where every decision reshapes both the world and the characters who inhabit it. In this experience, the lines between the mind and the environment blur, clashing and transforming with each choice, leading players through a constantly evolving narrative landscape,” explains the studio.
Longdue has not detailed which members of the original team are working on this game, though we do know that Aleksander Rostov and Robert Kurvitz are not involved.
Dark Math Games is a team with about 20 employees from the original Disco Elysium working on their own detective RPG calledXXX Nightshift. It will be a single-player RPG with many “tools and layers of gameplay,” and a unique dynamic company that will add “more fun and pathways to solve cases.”
“The innovative and powerful RPG system respects your time and trusts your intelligence to make significant decisions,” they say in their presentation. “It’s up to you to decide how your story unfolds and how it ends.”
