Editor at Fextralife. I look for the substantial in gaming and I try to connect video games to the emotions and stories they elicit. I love all things culture and history and have an odd fondness for the planet Jupiter. I think my dogs are pretty awesome too.
I generally like voice acting, though even in the Divinity series it ranged from the very good (Ego Draconis) to the… well, the voice acting in Beyond Divinity.Though even in ED the player remained mostly unvoiced, only reacting to certain situations rather than any dialogue.
It’s good to see they’ve already released a patch for a couple of hiccups that have been reported so far. I seem to have accidentally started a new play-through, this time as one of the pre-made characters: not something I generally do by choice when I can create my own, but I guess it’s interesting to have a back story and some of the interactions are quite different. The “pre-made characters” in question do also have a lot of scope for customisation, being more Shepard than Geralt in that regard.
Another interesting thing for me was how well the music would work with the passing of Kirill Pokrovsky, who was a key part of giving the Divinity games their distinctive personality. I’m happy to say I feel very positive about its soundtrack, and while there’s no real stand-out tracks for me so far, the music does a good job of setting the scene.
Gah I can’t wait to play this tomorrow!

I also prefer no voice acting.
There are 2 caveats though. I prefer no voice acting (in cRPGs) specifically because it allows for more options in how the player and NPCs respond to things. If, for whatever reason, there is/was going to be no additional writing done with or without voice acting then I’m not averse to it being added. The real trick would be convincing me that such a thing is the case, which very few games (all but 1 of which have very limited voice acting) have managed to do.

I’ve been enjoying it a lot. I guess it’s not surprising that it’s similar to D:OS in a lot of ways, but it’s also seen a number of big improvements, especially the much complained-about inventory management system. Obviously it’s still quite incomplete and one of those things is the lack of voices, which is a bit of a contentious issue anyway, though it is just a fact of life that at this early stage there’s nobody loudly extolling the virtues of cheese. We’ll just have to be patient.
