Dragon Age: The Veilguard Will Let You Sabotage Your Companions’ Relationships
InDragon Age: The Veilguard, your companions can form romantic relationships, or not, but it seems you’ll be able to interfere in them. They might even come to you for advice, and there’s no guarantee you’ll give them good advice.
Dragon Age: The Veilguardwas featured at theXboxGames Showcase by BioWare for PC, Steam Deck, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, and EA’s studio made it clear that friendships and romantic relationships can break down.
As mentioned on several previous occasions, the new installment in theDragon Agesaga will allow the player to build friendships and romances with their companions. However, these companions can also form relationships with each other, regardless of the player’s involvement. And as hinted by the studio in a recent event, you can either encourage these relationships or cause chaos.
“It felt right to give them the opportunity to form romances with each other as well as with the player,” said John Epler in an interview with PC Gamer.
The creative director ofThe Veilguardexplained, “We never want the companions to feel like they only exist for the player, just for the protagonist—they should always feel like real people.”
Corinne Busche, the game director, further elaborated on how this reinforces the “found family” fantasy that BioWare companions have always evoked so well.
“We’ve all been that friend—watching someone fall in love, experiencing the joy of a new relationship. Being able to witness that, and see how it manifests between companions in many ways, is joyful and exciting in its own right.”
But Busche also noted that not everything is sunshine and rainbows. Potential love triangles and other conflicts could add tension to the game. “When you have companions who are interested in each other, it creates interesting choices—how you interact with them, what you ask them to do,” Busche said.
Busche also hinted at the player’s potential to intervene in these relationships, in response to a question about whether or not you could sabotage your companions’ romances. She replied: “I don’t want to give too much away, but they might come to you for advice, and I can’t guarantee that you’ll give them good advice,” leaving many curious about how all this will play out.
This aspect of the game is seen as BioWare’s answer toBaldur’s Gate 3by Larian Studios, as there could be conflicts and interferences that will be worth experiencing.
Other BioWare games may provide clues toThe Veilguard. For instance, Garrus and Tali could get together inMass Effect 3, or Aerie and Haer’Dalis inBaldur’s Gate 2.
In Dragon Age 2, you could also interfere with Aveline’s attempts to court her co-worker, Donnic. IfThe Veilguardis anything like this, it could lead to plenty of future memes.
It’s clear thatDragon Age: The Veilguardwill let you sabotage your companions’ romantic relationships—the real question is how, and what might happen after.
