The wait is nearly over to discover the newDragon Age: The Veilguard, the fourth installment of Bioware’s RPG franchise, which brings together a group of heroes led by Rook to stop the new threat looming over Thedas.
Ten years afterDragon Age: Inquisition, the Canadian studio returns to its RPG series with a game more focused on combat and action. It has already been confirmed that it is NOT an open-world game.
This doesn’t have to be a bad thing.Dragon Age: The Veilguarddelves into itscombatsystem, which former series producers have labeled as the most enjoyable to date.
Rook and seven companionsembark on an epic adventure that includes all the elements you’d expect from a Dragon Age game: romances and flings, character-specific narrative arcs, violence, skill trees… and not a single reference to blood magic.
The latest issue of EDGE magazine is dedicated toDragon Age: The Veilguard, and both Corinne Busche (Director) and John Epler (Creative Director) have revealed more details about the game.
For example, you probably didn’t know thatThe Veilguardhas the largest city in the entire RPG franchise.
Now that we knowDragon Age: The Veilguardis not an open-world game, both Bioware leads explain the reason behind this decision and surprise us by revealing that the game will feature the largest city in the entire series.
The mission-structured design is a plus for the team, as it allows them to focus more on narrative and character development. Pacing was the key factor to consider.
InDragon Age: The Veilguard, we will visitMinrathous, the largest city in the saga to date. It’s currently undergoing expansion, and players will be able to lose themselves in its streets (consider it a large open area). They say it’s the complete opposite of Orlais (a city from Inquisition).
Regarding the combat system, Busche and Epler highlight two elements that are crucial for the proper execution of battles: the tactical camera and responsiveness.
Combat primarily centers onRook, so you won’t have to worry about controlling all seven of the protagonist’s companions. Despite the faster-paced combat, they recommend using the pause function to plan each action.
Pay close attention to the skills as well. It will be important to consult the skill tree, as it indicates whether you can combine attacks and perform combos between different characters.
Narratively, Bioware confirms that the companions inThe Veilguardwill be almost as important as Rook. There are many side quests that delve into each character’s past, though they acknowledge that players will have their two or three favorite characters.
An important note is that the companions have their own personalities and do not depend on Rook in any way. They will have their own narrative arcs that players can discover.
To conclude, both developers remind us thatDragon Age: The Veilguardis a single-player RPG, which is what they have always excelled at. They won’t be making another game “in the dark,” like they did with Anthem.
