Capcom’s showcase confirmed Dragon’s Dogma 2’s launch date, Trickster Vocation, characters, Elvish settlement and revealed new gameplay.
Revealed in the new trailer was a newEnemy. Introduced in the showcased as the giant Talos, who emerges from the sea. In Greek mythology,Talosis a bronze automaton or living statue meant to protect but it looks like his protecting days are over. Instead, he will be one of the massive enemy to defeat. On closer inspection, his body almost looks like wood or carved stone but seems pretty difficult to penetrate as a player tries to pierce its armour-like body with what looks to be a ballista.
The sheer size of this enemy is amazing, it towers storeys high which requires the player to jump from a high structure to climb aboard. To weaken its resolve, the player goes for the giant red ruby-like stone protruding from its body, hacking away at its crystals.
Another way up is by using the birds that seem to hoist the group (yes Pawns and all) into the air, making a perfect way to drop in on the enemy. Successfully breaking a weak point in its right eye, Talos begins to fountain spray what looks to be reddish oil.
Showing off more ways to slow it down, an archer pings arrows into the weak point on its back.
Also teased at the end of the showcase were a couple of new enemies the Dullahan and Drake. The Dullahan is seen clutching his own ghostly head in one hand while he has a scythe weapon in the other.
We also get a quick catch-up on the story. New story beats are hinted at in the new trailer, introducing new characters that all have a part to play. The Arisen are those who have had their heart stolen by the Dragon. Interestingly, while the sequel does “mirror the first game”, the story will take place in a “parallel world”. We were already introduced to a couple of locations previously. This showcase takes a closer look atVermund, a kingdom which is undergoing a power struggle for the throne.
Introducing the Queen Regent Disa, whose plan is to get her son Sven to take the throne as a false Arisen. She’s giving off real Cersei from GOT vibes in what’s shown, as ambitious. While graceful she definitely has a holier-than-thou attitude. This also means Pawns are actually serving a fake Arisen. This begs the question of why they would follow someone who isn’t an Arisen and how?
Pawnsare used as a source of power inBattahl. Leading the kingdom of Battahl is Empress Nadinia. She is a newly introduced race of Beastren in the sequel, which takes almost Khajiit-like.
While they are on opposite sides, they both view the dragon as a threat. Pawns and Arisen however they don’t seem to agree on. We also get a look at some of the key players in the plot, Menella, Wilhelmina, Brant and Sven.
Brant is the captain of the balance guard in Vermund. He has been demoted status in the royal court for opposing the Queen Regent and seems to be on the side of the Arisen. Menella on the other hand is a Beastren of the Lambent Flame, a protector of the high priestess and her acolytes. She’s extremely loyal to Nadinia and is also concerned about each of the races are treated.
Another character to watch out for is Wilhelmina who is in charge of Rose Chateau in Vermund. She seems to have some sway with influential members of nobility as they are frequent patrons of her establishment. Charming, intelligent and open minded.
Sven is the son of Queen Regent Disa, and also the heir to the throne. According to the official website he isn’t privy to his mother’s conspiracies and is more concerned about doing the right thing. He’s young, slightly naive and follows in his mother’s footsteps when it comes to elegance.
Taking a look at side Quests, we get a peak at a new Elven settlement called theSacred Arborwho speak their own language. Following the character Glyndwr, they act as an interpreter. Quests not only provide some interesting content but can deepen relationships with characters you meet in the world.
In this quest, Glyndwr requires you to help rescue his sister who has been stolen away by an Ogre. We get a peak into the rescue, with the character carrying her. There’s a whole distraction plan for this quest which looks like a fun side story to get into.
The Elven realm looks absolutely amazing, giving LOTR Rivendell grandeur mixed in with some woodland, with its beautifully situated castle. The characters within also could be interesting to get to know. Demonstrated in the showcase is a new ability for Pawns, interpretation. While not all Pawns can translate elvish, some can with the Specialisation Woodland Wordsmith which is very useful. These are Specialisation pawns that can be acquired.
Another Specialisation teased is Logistician, which seems to share the weight or lighten the load of items you carry. These are some exciting new additions, and we can’t wait to see more of what’s in store.
We get a look at the all-new character creation system. As there is a new Beastren race introduced, Capcom gave us a closer look at the number of customisations for aesthetics. This includes different fur types, patterns, colors and even thickness.
Creating your character or Pawn will be highly detailed with the upgraded photorealism captured by photogrammetry technology. Players can select a face and the system will recommend others that you can quickly choose from.
A newVocationis revealed, this time theTrickster. This Vocation is only to be used by the Arisen, who specialises in wielding Censers that can cloud the enemy. They produce smoke that can conjure illusions that ultimately make the enemies fight among themselves. They can also buff Pawns beyond their usual power for a set period of time. This new Vocation looks to be more of a support role, supporting their Pawns in combat.
