Dragon’s Dogma 2 Has An Open World Four Times Bigger Than the First

The long-awaited sequel Dragon’s Dogma 2 got new details shared at the Capcom Showcase. The trailer shown was the same one that debuted during thePlaystation Showcaseat the end of May. But the director of the game Hideaki Itsuno unveiled some new details. As well as confirmed more about what to expect in the second entry.

Firstly, Itsuno talked about the features that would be inherited fromDragon’s Dogma. The sequel will still be first and foremost a single-player game. Just like the first, players will co-op with AI called Pawns. This we kind of expected as this is the essence of Action-RPG’s combat system. Speaking of combat, this will continue the “action/roleplaying” mechanics that we know and love. Also mentioned is that it will continue to be set in the open world. The world will be four times bigger than the original game.

The first title has a sprawling world you could explore with yourPawns. That core experience looks like it’s not going anywhere. Playing as the Arisen once again, we will get to team up with our own Main Pawn which is customisable. What made the first title unique was how the Pawn system allowed you to co-op with other player’s Pawns.

This opens the game to a number of class/build combinations. This gives the option to bring in Pawns that can round out your team. Lending out your own Pawn also gained you some rewards. Capcom could have some changes for the system.

But the Pawn system is getting a bit of an upgrade combat-wise since the decade-long title was released, as it should. These AI-driven characters are now more “precise” in their actions. Hopefully this means they spend a little less time on the floor, and have a more intuitive playstyle. These helpful group members now can offer some help navigating and even give a quick morale boost by giving you a high five. The whole premise is to make it feel like you’re fighting alongside your own band of adventurers.

Noticeably Dragon’s Dogma 2 has had a graphics upgrade. Its high-def visuals are running on Capcom’s RE Engine. If you’ve played any of the recent RE games, such as theResident Evil 4 remakeorResident Evil Village, the graphics are really something.

Vocations are also confirmed to be returning as one would expect. These are essentially jobs that dictate how characters fight. From trusty swords to magic, the fantasy title had fair few combinations, hopefully, this will be expanded in the second. The director does tease newVocations, hopefully this also means new hybrid vocations too. The mix of weapon-wielding with magic infusion was my favourite to play in the first, such as theMagick Archer.

Introduced are two new characters that are pivotal to the new game’s story and are featured in the game’s key art. First Ulrika, a bow wielder who holds some special connection with the Arisen. Then there’s the new race beastren being introduced which looks almost Khajiit-like. The character Nadinia is a high priestess.

New foes are also teased, such as the snake-haired Medusa. Dogma’s mythical enemies are synonymous with the game, and this time it looks like we’re getting more to fight.

No release window has been stated which might leave fans a little disappointed as I’m sure they can’t wait to adventure. Itsuno does promise new details down the line, but we’re itching to hear more, especially about the new vocations.
