Dune: Awakening Direct Unveils Massive Details About the Anticipated MMORPG
Dune: Awakening, theMMORPGset on Arrakis developed byFuncom, has unveiled new details during the second Dune: Awakening Direct. This presentation showcased gameplay footage and in-depth details about character creation, server structure, and the various narrative branches in a world where Paul Atreides was never conceived.
As announced in itsSummer Game Festtrailer,Dune: Awakeningwill explore an alternate timeline where Jessica Atreides gave birth to a daughter instead of Paul Atreides, who would have become the Lisan al Gaib. This game, with more freedom in its narrative, starts with players creating their character, choosing all the details of appearance, personality, and specialization: Mentat, Swordmaster, or Bene Gesserit.
Dune: Awakening is an open-world survival game with third-person action, where players can ally with Great Houses like the Harkonnen and Atreides.
“Ensuring the world feels perfectly integrated and connected has always been one of our goals in Dune: Awakening,” explains Joel Bylos, the creative director. The game will be structured with multiple massive sandbox maps, using a system called the Overland Map, allowing more players to play on each one.
“We built this structure with the idea of making the game expandable, which is difficult with a single map. The idea of the Overland Map is to let us keep developing the world and provide players with new spaces to explore. Who knows what it will look like in 5 years?”
As for the character creation system, it is undoubtedly one of the fundamental pillars of Dune: Awakening. During the presentation, the robustness and detail of the character creation system was demonstrated.
Where you will be able to choose each aspect and appearance, select your planet of birth and even the specialization of your mentor. Players have different specializations available such as Mentat, Swordmaster or Bene Gesserit, which will determine the initial skills with which they will begin their adventure.
Although Dune: Awakening is not a direct adaptation, the development team has collaborated with Greig Fraser, the cinematographer, and the creative team from the films at Legendary Pictures. This ensures a stylistic coherence between the game and the movies, so players feel they are part of the same world.
Following some footage, concept art, and details about its basic principles, many more details have been revealed in this Dune Awakening Direct, ahead of the first gameplay reveal at Gamescom.
