EA Conference Summary: Mass Effect

EA’s conference kicked off with a brief officialreveal of Mass Effect: Andromeda! Very sleek prerendered trailer, but no gameplay or deets.

The newNeed For Speedgame is titled just that: Need For Speed. CONFUSING. The game features competitive and cooperative modes classic to the series, but now with five factions! Features from Most Wanted and Rivals combined into one game where you race for cred and domination over other players. Car customization is all point and click now – this style is becoming popular, and suits NFS very well. Everything you do in the game – literally everything – contributes to your progression across all factions in drop-in/drop-out competition. ComingNovember 3rd!

Then we learned about the expansion forStar Wars: The Old Republic, titled Knights of the Fallen Empireto be released on October 27th this year! Battle a new enemy for control of the galaxy. A prerendered trailer showed the expansion’s story: the beginning of two young boys’ journey as Jedi, and the rivalry that drove them apart.

EA promised beta tests and says they will be inviting players to meet and speak to the devs on behalf of gamers.

Next, a really heartfelt game from a studio called Coldwood.Unwravel, created by Martin Sahlin on a camping trip – who was literally shaking in ecstasy to show his game at E3 – follows a character named Yarnie, made of yarn, as he travels the memories of a someone’s life. It’s a very charming physics-based puzzle platformer.

PVZ Garden Warfare gets a sequel, even more chaotic than the first game! Features new classues including the Imp, with his speed and SMGs; Superbrains, a superhero melee class; and the d(r)ead pirate Captain Deadbeard. New features include the ability to call in armored suits and superplants. The game features split-screen local play, and you can transfer unlockables from the Garden Warfare to Garden Warfare 2.

Also, the game will receive ongoing free DLC.

Do you like sports? Then prepare to be crushed underneath sports.Madden 16, NHL 16, NBA 16. Speaking of NBA 16, you can scan-in your own face with the mobile app, and it looks pretty awesome. You can control when you shoot now. Animations have received massive upgrades, and you can customize your player’s movement and expression. Even for a non-sportsguy like me, that looks pretty cool. Pele appeared for a brief chat before we saw footage of FIFA 16. I am told it’s “beautiful”.

Next up, we saw mobile new mobile games includingStar Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, and Minion’s Paradise. The latter is a resource management game. Not sure what Galaxy of Heroes was! It is a “huge game” with lots of characters and things from Star Wars. That’s all they said. CONFUSING.

Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst was finally shown in gameplay form! Play as Faith, a troubled teen with a dark past, and fight back against the twisted surveillance culture run by the tyrannical villain Gabriel Kruger. The game world is completely open – no boundaries, no loading screens – and filled with challenges in addition to the main story. If you’re like me and thought guns ruined what Mirror’s Edge did best, good news! Guns are gone! Instead, you will use your parkour and martial arts to take down aggressors. Looks great!

BATTLEFRONT. Holy crap you guys. First off, game looks gorgeous. We were shown a recreation of the Hoth battle, and for the first time in three decades, it actually made my eyes widen! The scale is overwhelming – as infantry, the terrain is unbelievable. While flying in ships or navigating in walkers, you can scarcely see the ant-sized people on the ground. There are canyons large enough for an X-wing to fly through! I don’t know about you, but the fantasies are flooding my brain.

The very end of the trailer showed Luke Skywalker entering the fray to cleave troopers with his lightsaber and flinging them with force push, culminating in a lightsaber duel with an opposing player controlling Darth Vader! HYPE!!!

A Prinny who plays SRPGs unironically.

Well, at the least they showed something new. I am still skeptical about ME, after the third’s game ending.
