Square Enix releases epic trailer featuring the story rich Final Fantasy 16, spotlighting the role of the crystals as well as the warring nations.
The trailer begins with the lore of the game, set in the world of Valisthea. The game is looking to be very story rich, and the four minute trailer only scratches the surface of the warring world. The trailer is called “Ambition” which rightly describes the motivations behind the different nations all vying for power.
A running theme in Final Fantasy games since the first one are crystals. In Final Fantasy 16 these crystals seem to be of utmost importance but their light is waning. Each nation wishes to claim them for themselves and will fight for them.
We also get to see some of the Dominants. These are people who are able to channel the power of dangerous creatures called Eikons. Each nation seems to the have their own way of dealing with Dominants. Some send them right into the thick of things, putting them in the frontlines of battle, used as “weapons of war”. The footage shows some of these characters harnessing their power, almost losing control as the power surges through them as conduits.
Each nation is represented by one Eikon. The Grand Duchy of Rosaria for example is home to the Phoenix. We see a character Joshua summoning this great fire bird. Introduced are two new Dominants to be shown, Bahamut and Odin.
The Dragoon leader Dion Lesage is the Dominant that wields Bahamut’s powers. A beloved prince of the people, he has the ability to “turn the tide of battle”. He’s so famous in fact, Sanbrequios bards are known to sing of his heroism.
The other Dominant revealed is Barnabas Tharmr. A wanderer who stumbles upon the shores of Ash. This individual harness the skill of the blade, winning him his own kingdom. Using his powerful Eikon Odin, Barnabas managed to take over and push back the beastmen that rebelled again his rule. He also likes to do his own fighting not just lead.
We even get to see some of these transformations in action, with larger-than-life bosses. The action just keeps coming as we see clashes between different Dominants wielding their powers. FF16 is looking to be a feast for the eyes with some very dark themes. It looks like those who possess the power of the Eikon also take quite a toll physically.
