Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Trailer Shows Off a Harrowing Journey

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth gets a new trailer that teases some of the original’s iconic moments. We also get more combat info on Cait Sith and Yuffie.

Square Enix just loves to tease its fans. Those excited for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth just got a minute-long trailer titled “Destined for Rebirth”. The best thing about the new footage is how they detailed some of the original game’s more memorable scenes.

Particularly, we get a quick look at the Nibelheim incident, which should be very iconic. To say that this scene defined a generation would be underselling it, as this is quite a pivotal moment in the game’s mythos. Sephiroth’s menacing smile as well as Cloud’s helpless demeanor just paints a harrowing picture of the things to come.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is shaking things up. With the many changes that Final Fantasy VII Remake brought to the table, the flow of one of video game history’s most iconic titles might change dramatically. Of course, we see that Zack Fair will have a notable presence in Rebirth – something that is very surprising to most fans. Sephiroth has also been confirmed to be a playable character at some points of the game, cementing the fact that they will be telling the story from different points of view this time around.

The rest of the trailer is a quickfire montage of other things to expect. We get glimpses of battle scenes with Cloud and Aerith performing synergy attacks. But we also get to see Yuffie and Red XIII joining the cast. Tifa, Barret, and Aerith also strike some great poses for fans.

One other notable scene in the trailer is where we see Tifa falling into a chasm below. Cloud desperately calls out her name as she can only look in slow motion. This may spark many theories on how the story as a whole can change. Maybe Tifa’s journey is at an end in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth? Only time can tell.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth also got an accompanying feature piece on the official Square Enix site alongside the trailer drop. We got to see one screenshot each of Starboard Junon and the Shinra-8 boat. There were already a few scenes of both in the Destined for Rebirth trailer, but it’s nice to see a high-quality still image.

The Starboard Junon is a residential area that was built for Shinra personnel (and theoretically also for their families). Capitalism is at an all-time high here, as the streets are peppered with various shops for the affluent. Starboard Junon is also on high alert as Shinra has begun the preparations for a presidential inauguration. Perhaps Cloud and company would like to gatecrash this momentous event?

Next is Shinra-8, another entirely new location in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. This is a massive cruise ship that was built to connect the East and West, as well as carry the citizens between continents. Here, Cloud can participate in aQueen’s Bloodtournament for fame and fortune (presumably).

We also get some info on how Cait Sith and Yuffie will operate in Final Fantasy VII’s combat, both as solo participants as well as in synergistic attacks. As previewed before, Cait Sith (the cat) can zip around the battlefield, scratching their opponents and giving them many many cuts. In a pinch, you can summon a massive moogle that can harm enemies or even buff allies. The most fun of attacks looks like a massive drop kick to the face, courtesy of the moogle.

Yuffie on the other hand, chains quick attacks while she builds up a steady stream of ATB gauge. We got to play extensively as Yuffie already in the DLC, so she operates more or less the same.

When paired together though, their Synergy Ability will allow you to unleash a devastating musical attack onto your foes. Synergy Attacks are a new form of offensive move that players can perform as their team grows in closeness. The higher the rapport team members have with each other, the more Synergy Abilities you unlock. So it would be best to have everyone on friendly terms with each other.
