Final Fantasy XV Delayed to November

Square Enix has confirmed thatFinal Fantasy XVwill now release on November 29th, giving the game an additional 2 months of development beyond its initial released date of September 30th.

In the video (use the CC button for more languages), director Hajime Tabata explained that after completing the master version of the game, the team began work on a day one patch. It was decided that the contents of the day one patch should release with the base game, and not be part of a downloadable day one experience. According to Tabata, a patch can’t be applied by all players due to issues of internet access, and the content in the patch needs time for polish. This led to the decision to delay the release until late November.

According to Square Enix, the delay “will allow the development teams time to further polish and conduct quality testing so that the reality of the game can match the expectations of both the fans and the creative teams.” Whether this delay also impacts the release timing of the Kingsglaive movie and Brotherhood anime remains to be determined.

Delays are not uncommon with projects of this scope. The base game is confirmed to be finished, with an imminent release of gameplay footage according to Tabata. Thoughts on the delay? Let us know in the comments and check back with us as we continue to bring updates on the game’s development.

“the last guardian all over again?”

I suppose the era of last minute delays has come and coincides with the era of the “day 1 patch” when you knew you had to have your game out the door 6-8 weeks before release you also had to make the call on delays 6-8 weeks earlier. Now it doesn’t matter that the game version being sent to the presses is essentially unplayable, what matters is if you think can make the game playable in that time period.

In other words that delay was made right now because they were going to go gold and knew they couldn’t hit the end of September. They don’t want to mass-produce the game and have the complete boxes sitting there unsellable because there’s no patch to make them playable. Of course it also points out that the contents of the disc is basically irrelevant. If your day 1 patch is almost the size of the disc, what’s the point of the disc? I suppose with it being a FF game at least there’ll be a bunch of pre-rendered video that doesn’t need to be downloaded.

It’ll be interesting to see when we finally move to fully digital consoles if we get delays even up to release days the way we often get on digital-only PC games.

They’ve been struggling with getting stable performance, not a huge surprise, although I also would not be surprised if we don’t see them use the Luminous Engine again for quite a while.

yeah the time of year is not ideal, so close to the holidays and end of semester testing and such.

I’m quite salty over the delay because I don’t have the time to play it if it releases then.

I had October- November to play before knuckling down to serious work for my finals, but this pretty much kills my aspirations of being able to play it at a decent rate.

I hope though that this results in a better product, and that some of the reports about the game being poor are just nothing whispers.

As long there’s no season pass or day one DLC I’m fine with it lol

Despite all the cons, still looking foward to this game.

I agree. There are a lot of reasons to get salty over a delay, but this one isn’t particularly egregious or particularly long.

I’m glad they decided to implement the patch into the base game they release, instead of do the normal “release day one patch, have everyone download extra 6gigs before they can play” thing.

I’d rather have the bugs fixed.

Well the good news is the master version is done, so all we’re waiting on is the patch to be integrated.

the last guardian all over again?

If they delay this game any longer I’m gonna start believing it’s just a damn myth.
