God of War, A Shift In Game Mechanics!

The changes don’t stop there. We recently learn that there will also be a major overhaul to Kratos’s Upgrade Path, creating a different dynamic inGod of War.

In a recent interview with theOfficial PlayStation Magazine,God of Wardirector Cory Barlog discussed such changes that fans of the series may notice in the new entry.

Barlog tells that their vision was to “leave behind” the classic upgrade path mechanic in favor of a new one that creates a more immersive connection with the player as they develop Kratos and Atreus during their playthrough.

Wanting to develop Kratos more organically, Sony’s Santa Monica Studios brings in a dwarven duo,BrokkandSyndr. According to Norse mythology, this pair were the onesresponsiblefor craftingThor’s Hammer.

They will be there “to help you upgrade as well as develop your combat perspective (new moves and specials) for the two main characters.” The studio’s goal was to find “a way to contextualise it more in the world” and to create an upgrade system that was “more fun” with a much more meaningful narrative.

All of this will happen in a natural pace. Barlog then goes on, “Through the interactions between them, you are able to fully understand and actually help change the arc for each of these characters.”

The team is fully aware of what players loved about the franchise and is careful about their new ideas forGod of War.
