Hogwarts Legacy May Turn the Tide on 15 Year Trend of Best Selling Game in the US
For the past 15 years, the top-selling game in the US has been Rockstar’s major franchises or Call of Duty but Hogwarts Legacy might take the lead as new figures reveal.
Each year for the last 15 years, there has been a pattern of franchises taking the top spot for the best-selling game. However Hogwarts Legacy might have overtaken the charts this year. Usually, the top title for over a decade has been one of three options, Call of Duty, or a Rockstar game such as Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption orRed Dead Redemption 2.
This year, however, the trend is changing as new figures emerge from the marketing company Circana Group L.P. The list includes Hogwarts Legacy at the number one spot, followed by Call of Duty Warfare III and in third place The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This US best-selling games chart includes both digital and physical releases of the games. Platforms include the Nintendo eShop, Playstation, Steam and the Xbox platform. COD has excelled in the month of November, ahead of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Hogwarts Legacy.
Just last month, Hogwarts Legacy released on the Switch, which had gotten delays throughout the year. This would also account for boosting sales numbers towards the end of the year. But as this chart is year to date, it accumulates sales numbers for this year so far, ending in November. The Switch release has bolstered numbers and was the second best-selling Switch title in November behind Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
As we head into the holiday season, it will be interesting to see if numbers change as it will be a busy time for game sales.
