How The Taken King Will Change Destiny
On September 15th, Destiny’s newest expansion,The Taken King, will release to fans ready for more action. At a hefty price tag of $40 which is double the price of the prior two expansions, developer Bungie has promised that the new content is wellworth itin size and quality. So what exactly is being offered in the new expansion? Let’s take a look. (Please see an update on confirmeddouble vault space here)
Highlighting the release is a brand new story campaign, centered aroundOryx, the Taken King who desires vengeance over his son Crota’s death by theGuardians. Manipulating the Darkness, Oryx creates an army of corrupted Taken bent on consuming civilization. Players will be tasked with penetrating Oryx’s massive hiveDreadnaughtorbiting over Saturn, and putting an end to the campaign of destruction. Expect to travel deep into the nooks and crannies of the massive ship, discovering new gear along the way.
Three new subclasses make their debut: the TitanSunbreaker, WarlockStormcaller, and HunterNightstalker. The Sunbreaker will feature a flaming hammer that can be summoned and either thrown at range or wielded for up close melee smashing. The Stormcaller can conjure up an electric storm of Arc energy. The Nightstalker will feature a void energy bow for lethal ranged precision.
There will be of course a bevy of newgearand exotics for the players to discover as they play. Also included are a major six person fire-team raid, seven new crucible multiplayer maps, three new strikes and several “Taken” revisions to existing strikes to give them a fresh feel.
Bungie is using the expansion as an opportunity to overhaul a few core game concepts, namely leveling and questing. The leveling cap will be raised to 40, and the game is changing the Light level system in which players leveled up to 20 and then increased their levels further through maxing out armor. With the revision, players will continue to level up past 20 via killing enemies and completing bounties all the way to the level cap. Armor will still play a vital role in defense. Loot drops will also be more closely tied to a player’s level.
Quests will now have a different feel, and will be designed in a more story focused fashion, similar to the base game’s Exotic bounties. They will also be organize in-game differently in a menu tab called Quests, compiling all the various activities into one group. The HUD will now also track quest and bounty progress which can be called up via a directional button and players will now be able to hold up to 16 bounties at a time. The last major revision here is that players can now complete bounties via the Quest menu, saving them the trip back to the Tower for turn in.
There is a quite a bit of content to look forward to and some major changes to the game’s formula, enough overall to make this feel like a partial new entry in the series. Those who are new to the game can pick up the Legendary Edition for $60 which includes the base Destiny game plus all of its expansions. Amazon Prime members can pre-order the Legendary Edition for $50. Check back with us on theDestiny Wikiuntil release and beyond for more!

Editor at Fextralife. I look for the substantial in gaming and I try to connect video games to the emotions and stories they elicit. I love all things culture and history and have an odd fondness for the planet Jupiter. I think my dogs are pretty awesome too.
A group helps big time, at Crota time we had a boat load of regulars and almost had a rotation system, tuesday we all paired up and did the nightfalls first. Repeated until all our characters had done it. Then onto the raid, we did it for ourselves then went back to help the others, anyone who had gjallahorn was obliged to help, weds was finishing up the raids, rest of the week then was messing around and helping randoms with nightfalls, vogs, crota’s etc. when it was really hopping, we were running 20-30 raids a week(vog and crota). Kinda makes me sick when i see people charge for raids\trials on destinylfg.
It’s been kinda quiet since POE came out, particularly when the trials of osiris took off.
E, its a soloable game but if you want to get the best out of it, coop is the way. Very big part of the game, there’s just some things that are not soloable and coordination is needed big time, it’s not just throwing numbers at a problem\enemy.
That is true, but when it comes to raids especially, it’s best to have a regular team to do it with, I find.My PSN has finally come around, and now I can actually pre-order the stand alone version of the taken king, but I’m not sure if I should get it, or just pre-order MGS V instead. it’s a hard choice.
Edit: I just bought both.
I am a Fextra Knight Gardian, I have been active all year long, just like many other Fextra Knights, we play on ps4 and we always have people on, and even when we cant play ourselves we can always pair you up with people who are online.

Welcome Gardians!
I’m a little late to the party, but I would definitely be down to link up with the Knights of the Fextra watch. I’ve always personally preferred co-op experiences.
There are Destiny players on the wiki chatroom on this site regularly who will happily team up with you. I know because I literally just joined them this week for a couple of games.
Join the Fextra Knights! The more the merrier.
That’s it exactly. If you aren’t playing with a serious clan, you get locked out of a great deal of content, and I see that now. For this reason, if nothing changes, future Destiny games/content will have half-price value and I’ll wait to play later, for less.
Yeah due to lack of people to play with I’ve never even finished the crota raid on hard mode, and I’ve never been able to try out the trials of Osiris. So getting TTK, despite kind of wanting to, just seems like a bad idea, since lack of people to play with will lock me out of alot of the game. That and certain other games also coming out around the same time, that I know I have to get.
To their credit, Bungie has made good improvements, and TTK seems to be shaping up well. I don’t have a regular clan of people to play with anymore, so at this point I’m actually waiting to see if more matchmaking options are offered. People like to sing the praises of LFG sites, but honestly, I find those hit or miss anyway, and feel I have just as much chance matching up with good players in game-based matchmaking.
I too have my doubts about story. Staten’s departure seemed to handcuff them, but if they bring in new writing talent then maybe they’ll turn a corner.
If there are wider matchmaking options, I’ll probably pick it up. If not, I’ll likely pack it in for good.
I admit I may be biased since I’m just getting back into Destiny lately (and very much enjoying myself), but I like how The Taken King is shaping up.
I really think the experience of playing Destiny is going to get better and better. For me it’s already a very satisfying game to play, it just needs to be a bit less ‘grindy’, and more stream-lined. Looking at the info on TTK, it seems like Bungie are genuinely doing something about that.
I am still hesitant about the actual story though. Bungie dropped the ball with the original story, there’s no denying it. I hope they’re waiting to reveal some good stuff in the future.
