King Arthur: Knight’s Tale Legion IX Expansion Lets You Play as the Romans

Developer Neocore Games announces the expansion for their turn-based RPG called King Arthur: Legion IX set to bring new enemies, heroes and mechanics.

New combat mechanics are set to shake up the game, and the new added twist of playing from the Roman’s side will surely make things interesting as they are undead. What new abilities will they gain as an undead army hasn’t been revealed, but must make them harder to kill if they’ve already fallen. Or they could gain an interesting death mechanic where you can resurrect them, there’s a lot of possibilities.

A new cinematic trailer prepares players for what’s in store for Avalon as the Legion prepares for an invasion and to uncover what’s left of the Roman colony. A new main character will uncover further secrets of the Lady of the Lake.

New screenshots show the battalion fighting in numerous locations including an amphitheatre. There seem to be multi-target attacks, including one that can rain down from the sky.

We do gain a few clues as to the protagonist who introduces himself as Gaius Julius Mento. The Mento’s family in history were one of the powerful ruling class families called the patricians. Interestingly, he was around when a plague gripped the city. Whether this takes inspiration from these events isn’t known yet.

Another interesting historical fact is that the ninth legion remains a mystery as to what happened to the battalion as records of their exploits seem to vanish after a certain date. This could be a new fantasy retelling of their disappearance as they rise a creepy undead army. What we do know is that there will be a larger party size and a whole new story to follow. Somehow they find their way to the mysterious island of Avalon.

A free 2.0 update is set to join the game on December 2nd along with a new Season. The new season ‘Rising Eclipse’ will bring class-specific and hero-specific balance changes. It will also bring changes to boss battles which will focus on value adjustments but there are a few surprises in store as the devs tease “you might be …challenged in new ways”. Other adjustments come in the form of map overhauls, adding and removing units to make fights a little more balanced.

Expect further changes to loot and items as well. A new item called Tome of the Hedges will let players return a hero to the Apsirant Hero List. This was a particular desire from players as they felt it was a bit too harsh to have to send away heroes when their Round Table was too full. With the new item, you won’t be forced to permanently make decisions you may regret.

Another major change is balancing the Teleport to Enemy on Kill Enchantment which causes trouble when used by a well-built champion. This was adjusted from 8 to 4. Damage against any Sidhe has been added instead enchants against Seelie or Unseelie. This will set up the Rising Eclipse season, making it far more manageable.

One new permanent addition to the base game is the Artificer’s Workshop which remains even after the seasonal content is done. The building of the Hospice will unlock the workshop which allows you to enhance items or even gain new ones. You will need to sought after crystals which you can find on missions that come in three different rarities.

Through modification, the item will be transformed into a new random piece of equipment so there is some RNG involved but it will still be within the same category. For example, a one-handed sword will be replaced with another one-handed sword. You can either modify the tier or the rarity of the item offered by applying the corresponding crystals. This will take some time, requiring to go on another mission while the item is being prepared.

Enhancements however are instant but do require some gold. The stats of the item will be improved with increments and the item won’t replace the old one.

By default, the Artificer’s Workshop will only allow one item per turn but you can gain more slots by upgrading the building through progressing the game.

Get ready for the Rising Eclipse. The new season will add a new feature called Rifts. So what are they? These unstable rips in the fabric of reality contain uncontrollable energies. The Sidhe seem to already know about them and want to claim them for themselves. In the new season, players will encounter these rifts on the battlefield which will grant Sidhe units huge boosts. Rifts will act as barriers, meaning they cannot step on tiles where these appear. The Sidhe units can however step inside these rifts, draining their energies and gaining buffs. They can also chain together multiple enhancements to absorb these powers.

Sidhe units will only however retain the buffs from rifts until the end of the mission. One good thing about defeating enemies with rift power is that it can be converted into a special resource which can be used for the player’s advantage. Watch out for rifts outside battles as well, as these can be a rare occurrence.

If you haven’t checked out the game yet, it combines turn-based tactical gameplay and traditional features. Leading a group of heroes to fight Arthur and restoreCamelot. The game has different paths to choose from, so you can replay it multiple times. The endgame will challenge you with epicbossbattles, quests, and more loot. The console versions will have improved graphics that will make Avalon look even more stunning in its dark fantasy style. With Update 2.0 coming there will be even more good things coming to the game.

We called the game highly nuanced with its mechanics and tactical design. It will certainly keep you on your toes with its tough combat which remains challenging but fair. You can find out more of what we thought of the game in ourreview.
