Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Creator Defends Their Historical Perspective

Kingdom Come: Deliveranceis an RPG set in a very specific historical period, which is why there are no firearms in the game. The game is available on PC, Steam Deck, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch, paving the way for Warhorse to developKingdom Come: Deliverance 2for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

The creator explains why the RPG is set in the medieval era. As Daniel Vavra shared in an interview, the game takes place in a specific period of European history to ensure a broad variety of weapons without needing to add guns.

Creating a fictional world in this setting avoids typical issues with technology and weaponry, as they aren’t tied to anything specific—similar to a game likeElden Ring.

ButKingdom Come: Deliveranceis different, especially because its real-world setting meant it had to be anchored to a precise moment in history.

“The first half of the 15th century is the most interesting because many things happened at that time,” Vavra explained in the interview.

The game emphasizes its historical importance, as the early 15th century was also a period of relative upheaval in Bohemia, now the Czech Republic.

Beyond the atmosphere, Vavra sees it as the most interesting period to focus on medieval armor and weaponry.

Vavra notes that the 15th century saw technological advancements that offered a wide enough array of weapons to enrich the game.

“A hundred years earlier, there would be much fewer options for interesting things like weapons and armor,” he explained. But perhaps the most important factor wasn’t just weapon variety.

The game’s setting also needed to be early enough in history that firearms hadn’t yet made their way into the arsenals of a war-torn Europe.

“Fifty years later, there would be gunpowder weapons, which would be too much,” he said. “They’d make armor obsolete,” making this time period ideal for the game’s development.

“This Gothic period is the most interesting in terms of knights and all that,” Vavra concluded as he continues developing the sequel.

Vavra’s view makes sense, and the combat system inKingdom Come: Deliverancewas one of its main selling points, as it would be a different experience to see halberds against muskets.

Fortunately,Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2seems set to follow a similar tone as the first game, with Warhorse Studios staying true to the original’s approach.

It’s likely that the creator wantedKingdom Come: Deliverancefirmly grounded inthatmedieval period, hence the lack of firearms—even if that choice might still not sit well with everyone.
