Larian Shares Why a Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC Expansion Might Not Happen
In a recent interview, Larian Studio shared why a Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC might not happen and it’s down to leveling.
Baldur’s Gate 3 has hadmassive successlaunching its full version this month. With the PS5 version coming next month, you might also be wondering what else is in store for the CRPG. According to a recent interview between Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke and PC Gamer this week, the developer shared why a Larian Shares Why a Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC might not be on the table.
When asking if the team are working on an expansion for Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC, Vincke explained that the studio isn’t currently working on one. This is due to the fact that the game caps at level 12. However, in Dungeons and Dragons, characters can make their way up to level 20. This would sound like an opportunity to provide further content with an expansion. However, Vincke explained that it’s not that simple for BG3 and would be “very hard” to continue adventuring with high-level characters towards the end-gamecombat. Reaching beyond level 12 means characters can become almost OP. Possessing powerfulSpellssuch as Foresight being able to see into the future, or Power Word Kill, letting you one-shot anything that moves with less than 100HP.
An end game like this would require a different tact in dealing with “antagonists” says Vincke. He goes on to say “Which would make this much more than an expansion in terms of development effort.” This means ultimately changing up the already meticulously planned game, changing it into something completely different for the Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC. This is why a lot of campaigns in DnD are “designed for level 12 or lower characters”.
Further complicating things is the number of endings. the game offers players a number of outcomes which would also influence how a Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC would play out. With 17,000 permutations to worry about, Vincke said players would be waiting “a long time” for them to build a DLC. While an expansion was considered quite early on in development, it was realised that the expansion would be uninteresting and not necessarily fun for players. But don’t feel too disheartened as Larian will let you know when they’re ready to share something DLC-wise.
That would not be cool. So we have to have the freedom to experiment and do our stuff. And then when we’re ready to announce it, we will.
In the meantime, there’s still plenty to adventure through in the Forgotten Realms. We’ll be putting out more guides and content. Check out our latestBaldur’s Gate 3 Paladin Class Guide. You can drop by ourBG3 wikifor all the latest info onclasses, weapons, skills, interactive mapand more.
