Lies of P Does Pinocchio’s Origin Story Justice In New Gameplay Trailer
Lies of P showed off a new gameplay trailer just two days ago to highlight the different locations we would explore, the characters we get to interact with, and a lot more!
Last December 17, we were treated with yet another trailer of the highly-anticipated Soulslike RPG known as Lies of P. It continues to be on everyone’s radar with hundreds of people lining up at gaming conventions to get their hands on this darker rendition of Pinocchio and how he came to be.
Lies of P’s latest trailer starts off by honoring the creator of The Adventure of Pinocchio, Carlo Collodi. As we’ve seen in the past, this action RPG draws its inspiration from Bloodborne, and true enough, the next images of the locations we’ll probably go to depict despair and decay. Truth be told, the city is indeed “falling apart”. A dead body is draped over a piece of plywood, a burning symbol is erected in the middle of a town square, and then there’s a factory with no one to tend to the production in sight.
A mysterious voice encourages us to go on a series of adventures in an attempt to save what’s left of the world. We’re still given a choice though – truth or lie? And this makes us wonder if the game will truly allow us to decide the outcome of the city or not. Sure, we’re expected to find a way to salvage anything that’s possible but can we also do otherwise?
Each of the locations in the trailer further amplifies the grim, Lovecraftian, and dystopian atmosphere. Everything just oozes Bloodborne. It’s shaping up to be a marvel of a game in terms of visuals. We can even be more confident since according to the previous Lies of P news,Neowiz was already 70% donewith its development.
We’re also treated to fine European architecture in 19th-century France including grand palaces, marvelous castles, and a museum of some sort. Pinocchio scours the city to defeat devious machinery of different sizes.
Pinocchio’s leftSlave Armis an interesting choice of machinery. It looks as if this omni-tool will be the basis for most of our traversal and combat prowess. The arm lets him rappel down ropes, open huge steel doors, transform into a minigun to shoot enemies with, and electrocute them as you see fit. It’s also worth noting that several augmentations can be used here to change the arm’s functionalities.
Not to mention that there are new weapons, which he can wield using his right hand. These include the mechanical umbrella, flaming chainsaw sword, metal shovel, and a massive hammer. Equally enough, the combat’s pace changes based on the type of weapon you’re wielding. For instance, it takes more effort, and is, therefore, slower, to attack using the chainsaw as opposed to the quick and fluid ax. They also sound distinct and impactful, showing how much damage each of them is capable of dealing with.
What’s also interesting is how you combine them with the different elements of your Slave Arm, much like in BioShock Infinite.
Unlike in the original story, Geppetto isn’t the first character you’ll be able to interact with. Instead, you’ll probably go through a series of quests first before meeting your maker. The beginning of the game starts after waking up in an abandoned area in the city of Krat. There’s also the Blue Fairy who fulfills Geppetto’s wish to turn Pinocchio into a real boy. But rather than the princess fairy in the movies, she has become a frail older woman. It’s possible that she has lost her powers as a result of the chaos ensuing.
The Blue Fairy then appoints Jiminy Cricket to serve as the conscience. We can probably assume that Jiminy would main companion in the game. He could serve as the “voice of reason” or acts as a way to connect the player to this unfamiliar world.
Toward the end of the trailer, we see people wearing rabbit masks. It’s highly likely that they’re theRabbit Undertakers, who as the name implies, carry a coffin to take the souls of the recently deceased. In fact, the original story is almost as grim as the game. These Undertakers have been summoned by the Blue Fairy to scare Pinnochio into taking “medicine” to save him.
