Mass Effect Andromeda Explores the Design of the New Alien Race Called the Kett

Over the past three games in the Mass Effect series, we’ve come to know and love some iconic alien races. Salarians, Turians, Asari, and Krogans are just some of the races that humanity has interacted with over the years. InMass Effect Andromeda, players are exploring a brand new galaxy, and as a result we will be introduced to new races. As part of Game Informer’s continuing monthly coverage of the game, today the newest race,Kettwas explored in afeature piece and accompanying video.

The video, which can be seen in the article walks you through the visual design considerations. Starting with their clothing, they began developing the identity of the Kett. The goal was to design the race to look foreboding but still allowing players to empathize with them. Because of the types of stories they want to tell, BioWare did not want players to dismiss them as mere antagonists, but rather complicated beings. Bone armor added a militaristic feel to their gear.

Further on the video, they look at the revisions made to the character models to arrive at the visual look they sought to compliment the race. The changes result in the ominous figure that we see in the game’s recentN7 Day trailer.

Editor at Fextralife. I look for the substantial in gaming and I try to connect video games to the emotions and stories they elicit. I love all things culture and history and have an odd fondness for the planet Jupiter. I think my dogs are pretty awesome too.

Its…. An okay design. It shares a lot of similarities to the Turians and Krogan. Being reptilian, having a carapace/thick hard scales, being slightly hunched forward.

I really wish they would go way outside of their comfort zone for designs, but maybe it would be too hard to animate.

Yes, and the Khet have a ‘halo’ because Chris Schlerf was the lead writer and he worked on Halo! Get it? Halo=halo! The Kett have halos because they wanted to make it more like Halo!
