Developer Atlus are working on a fantasy RPG called Metaphor: ReFantazio which will take the best features from the Persona series into the new title.

If you’re a fan of the Persona series you’re in luck as the same team is developer Metaphor: ReFantazio. It takes what made the series great and infuses it into the upcoming game. The makers of Persona 3, Persona 4 and Persona 5 are venturing into a new IP.

In a new trailer, it goes into detail about the social and time management systems from Persona and applies them to the new game with a fantasy setting. In the “Creator’s Voice” video it spotlights members of the development team who share how they have adjusted the Persona’s systems to match such a very different setting and narrative.

Metaphor ReFantazio is about a set of characters who are entering an important election set in the fantastical world of The United Kingdom of Euchronia. One slight spanner in the works is that the king has been assassinated. There’s magic that is connected to the throne and ultimately starts a royal tournament for power.

Just like in Persona, characters will grow their bonds. As the bonds grow, they will unlock new abilities and perks. In an attempt to gain the support of the masses, Metaphor’s hero will use social connections to build relationships. This will also boost their standing. These new abilities also will be influenced by the types of characters you build links with. For example, a warrior-type character might inspire abilities to do with that class type.

It’s safe to say that the social aspect will be a key part of the game, however this won’t be the only feature influenced by the Persona series. Time will also determine how you manage your schedule and which activities to prioritise before heading into a dungeon or boss fight. You will have to travel across the world in order to influence your political campaign, and travel also takes time in the game.

The game’s combat is reminiscent of Persona’s turn-based battles, however allowing you to fight enemies with hack-and-slash action moves to defeat low-level enemies. This means you can quickly do away with less threatening foes, ones you know you can easily take down instead having to face slower battles. This will avoid fights feeling overally repetitive and speed things up.
