Microsoft Speaks Out on Black Myth: Wukong Delay On Xbox Series X|S
Black Myth: Wukongopens a new chapter in “the console wars” following a statement from Microsoft, which sparks new theories about the delayed arrival of the game on the company’s consoles. The game, developed byGame Science, had already received a new trailer during theSummer Game Fest, confirming its release date onPS5 and PC,but the bad news of its delay on Xbox was due to optimization.
What we knew about this delay on Microsoft’s console was that its creators were currently “optimizing the Xbox Series version to meet our quality standards, so we won’t launch it simultaneously on all platforms.” Therefore,Black Myth Wukongwill debut on August 20th on PS5 and PC, although it is expected to arrive on Xbox consoles a few months later.
Naturally, this reminds us of another game:Baldur’s Gate 3, another title that had to be delayed on Xbox (although only by three months) because Larian had difficulties working with the Xbox Series S. The result was unprecedented: the Xbox Series S version had a content cut, specifically local split-screen multiplayer, something Microsoft had promised wouldn’t happen with the Series S. Despite having less RAM and GPU, it was supposed to run exactly the same games with the same content as the Series X.
Black Myth: Wukong, being an ambitious game technically, built on Unreal Engine 5 and from an independent studio, could be another such case.
The journalist asked the Chinese developer and Microsoft about this, and only Redmond responded with a statement that fuels theories without resolving any doubts about the real reason for Black Myth Wukong’s delay on Xbox Series X|S.
Microsoft’s response to the delay of Black Myth Wukong onXbox Series X|S: Microsofthas responded to Windows Central with an official statement that, while intentionally vague, allows for several interpretations.
“We are excited about the release of Black Myth Wukong on Xbox Series X|S and are working with Game Science to bring the game to our platforms.”
“We cannot comment on the agreements made by our partners with other platform owners, but we remain focused on making Xbox the best platform for gamers, and great games are at the heart of that.” says Microsoft.
Does this imply that Game Science has a temporary exclusivity deal with Sony, so that Black Myth: Wukong is released first on PS5? Without saying it explicitly, it seems to suggest so.
In fact, if this weren’t true, it would be quite irresponsible for Microsoft to launch these theories, which seem to contradict Game Science, by saying that the Xbox version ofBlack Myth: Wukongisn’t released on time due to optimization work when there might actually be an exclusivity deal with Sony.
