Modding Support Coming to Baldur’s Gate 3 Feature Cross-Platform Support

Modding forBaldur’s Gate 3has been a hotly discussed topic, and although there are currently Mods for the game out there on PC, players currently must use third party tools like Nexus Mods or Cheat Engine if they wish to modify their Baldur’s Gate 3 experience. And players on console have no options to speak, which is usually the case with most console games, both on Playstation and Xbox.

Modding Baldur’s Gate 3 is something I discussed with Sven Vincke, head of Larian Studios to some length, last August just before Baldur’s Gate 3 launched, and he did not have a lot of answers at that time. It seemed like it was something Larian really wanted to do, but was not sure how to pull off. Well it seems like they’ve figured it out, and we’ll be getting official mod support from later this year.

According to a Twitter post by Michael Douse, head of Publishing at Larian Studios, the development team has been working on “a robust, cross-platform plan for mod support to be released later in year.”

D&D has a rich history of modding, particularly during the Neverwinter Nights era, which practically changed the way modding was viewed forever. There are many players that continued to play Neverwinter Nights for many many years after its initial release simply because the custom D&D campaigns that were created in its engine were absolutely phenomenal, with some of them rivaling even the game itself.

Gaming has advanced a lot since then, and modding has changed, but the concept is still the same and the gaming community has still seen success with many major titles having a plethora of mods, that continue to keep fans engaged including Skyrim and Dark Souls.

By officially supporting mod tools, including on console, Larian has taken steps to ensure players will be engaging with Baldur’s Gate 3 in some form or another for many years to come, and I cannot wait to see what the BG3 Community comes up with!
