More Powerful Playstation 4 Model Rumored

Rumors continue to surface that Sony is working on a new, more powerful version of the Playstation 4. Tentatively referred to as the PS4 4K, the new console will sit alongside the current model similar to past generations which featured a launch and slim model.

The PS4 4K will be designed for graphics heavy applications although games will work for both versions. Players interested in cutting edge power will now have the opportunity to upgrade their console for an improved gameplay experience in ultra high definition resolution, giving owners of the newer 4K TV’s something to think about when making their console buying decisions.

The Wall Street Journal reported an expected announcement prior to the release of the Playstation VR in Octobor so it’s possible we’ll get an official reveal this summer at E3. Teasing the horsepower of a new PS4 before the release of the virtual reality headset may assuage Playstation players worried that the Oculus Rift/PC setup would be significantly more powerful than the current PS4 paired with a VR set. Putting a PS4 4K with the VR could give the Playstation a setup that rivals the tech capabilities of the Oculus. Strictly PC only gamers may still be in luck as Sony has said they are considering plans to bring the VR headset to PC as well.

There is no rumored price yet for the 4K Playstation but we can of course anticipate it to be more expensive than the base PS4. An offering of both versions of the console side by side would give the average gamer more options, as many are early adopters of new tech.

No doubt that virtual reality is going to be all the rage at this year’s E3, so we will definitely be on the look out for more info to share as well as new titles that may receive VR support. What are your thoughts? Would you be interested in a more powerful PS4? How about virtual reality in general? Share your opinions in the comments.

Editor at Fextralife. I look for the substantial in gaming and I try to connect video games to the emotions and stories they elicit. I love all things culture and history and have an odd fondness for the planet Jupiter. I think my dogs are pretty awesome too.

”If it’s microtransactions you’re worried about, though, you’re SOL. There isn’t a platform in existence that isn’t getting swarmed in F2P and in-app purchases, and PC tends to be worse about it than console.”

not a prob with near inf backwards compatibility and mountains of free user created custom content

Also a purchase i made decades ago, Quake. has allowed me to play more compelling free user created games/content than anything ps+ has offered since it hit ps4. Plus i dont have to worry bout those games ever vanishing as they are not tied to a sub and an online service.

Platform holders need to up their game, Sony may not see PC as a competitor ATM but its slowly creeping up on their ass. Sony no longer get piles of unfunded exclusive content and games by default like the ps1/2 days.

But Sony isnt all that disruptive to the game market as a whole, and that is a good thing.they are a large non directx gaming platform and drive forward API/ rendering tech effeciency wars.but they need to offer more value to their users.

Things like, no cross buy for the new ps2 classics on ps4 is terribad. (bought ps2 classics from ps3 should have entitled ps2 classic on ps4, i know disc based BC would be impossible/difficult as they would have to pay massive liscencing legal cost or include a ps2 chip on new ps4s)Microtransactions in 1st party games like the last of us and uncharted boils my piss, they already rake in the $$$ from paid online

Its even worse on xbox cause sometimes they pull post launch patched in microtransactions, like in forza, after all the reviews hit.

I wont hate sony on the hardware tho

2 reasons

im satisfied with it, its good value, its snappy, the games and content are not there tho, or anywhere this gen. thats a publisher issue

the other reason is, the year they pitched the thing, they were selling off buildings to stave off bankruptcy, but still managed to make a power packed budget box with a gcn1.1 gpu (xbox doesnt even have that)

I wouldn’t call PS+ a “microtransaction”. The 1yr sub pays for itself in the first month, so if you own a Sony platform, it’s kind of crazynotto sub. I do agree additional services should be included, though. The fact that Now is a wholly separate service baffles me.

If it’s microtransactions you’re worried about, though, you’re SOL. There isn’t a platform in existence that isn’t getting swarmed in F2P and in-app purchases, and PC tends to be worse about it than console.

It’s true that a PC the same price as the PS4 would outperform it to the point of embarrassment. However, even at $800 (assuming PS4.5 is an add-on and not a new console), you’re still paying less than half what you’d have to pay for a PC of equal output. To run PC games in 4K, you basically need two Titans. Granted, PS4.5 is upscaling to 4K. But at that point, can you even tell the difference between upscaled and native res?

According to a couple of sources, games developed for PS4.5 will be compatible with PS4. The expression “first-party” was not included, which further leads me to believe it’s an add-on. Compatibility really shouldn’t be anymore complicated than testing settings and editing an .ini file. It’s a weird place for consoles to go, with obvious drawbacks, but it’s not like this hasn’t been done before.

If Sony handles this right, it will actually be great. We won’t need a new generation of $600 consoles to keep up with new games. I’m iffy about Morpheus, for extremely technical reasons that they may or may not be able to address. But I don’t think this is the disaster some are making it out to be. I guess we’ll find out at E3.

4K TVs are being pushed super hard, but no by no means are they common

the price has to come down a lot before they become important enough to justify a switch to 4k

I just gave the ps4 market place a good look over,

So many microtransactions in games, even 60 bux ones that you need PS+ to play online.

(also you can preorder movies now? what the fuck?)

The value prop of console gaming is really bad right now, ps4k seems like a enthusist product, but most of ps4 catalog is microtransaction infested casual games.

Paying top dollar for game + for online sub + all these microtransactions + stopgap hardware. what a mess. depressing.

pretty shit tbh fam.

man, this industry

think i will pop in that 980ti in my pc after, or something newer/better, but i still dont play many new games if at all.

however PC is becoming objectivly better on all fronts for me. ( even just my 670 ftw low end plays my fav games extremly well, and my I7-4770-k wont be a bottleneck for awile.) unlimited backwards compat, endless custom content, free online.

if sony take out the ps+ sub for online ill actually bite tho.

Also sony’s 1st party this gen is a mess, games are comming but ps4k wil throw a wrench into deving

I’ve given it a bit more thought, and I think there’s a good chance PS4.5 is an add-on, rather than a new console. Think about PS4’s hardware. It’s got a pretty nice processor, but a shitass GPU compared to even a middle-of-the-road PC. The only reason it performs as well as it does is because it’s specialized hardware. Maybe a $400 console can run games at upscaled 4K in another 6-7 years, but there’s no way that happens this year.

However, if all Sony is doing is supplementing PS4’s existing hardware, it may be realistic. A $400 add-on with a bunch of extra RAM and another GPU or two could feasibly give PS4 the horsepower to render games in native 2160p, or 1080p upscaled to 4K, and it would be substantially cheaper to manufacture than a new console.

God I hope that’s the case. I really don’t want this to be a new console.

…For real though, guys, do not bring the PC vs console argument here. You’re not helping. >_>

Edit: For those of you saying this doesn’t affect you because you don’t have a 4K TV, it does still affect you. With a couple of exceptions, Sony consoles have never run games in native resolution. Those jaggies in Bloodborne aren’t there because of shoddy AA, it’s because the game is upscaling from 720p to 1080p. And upscaling looks shit. The new whatever-it-is will be capable of running games in native 1080p, meaning any game with a minor tweak for compatibility will look absolutely gorgeous, and you’ll see amassivejump in framerate. Not to mention a lot of the problems with BB’s online will go away, since the netcode is shackled to other non-network-related processes that are chugging due to poor optimization.

”looking forward to reading the casual fan boys talk about how its differents annd the PS4 – PS4 4K is superior to PC”

and that will be nothing but false flag posts or youtube comment section trolling. lol

looking forward to reading the casual fan boys talk about how its differents annd the PS4 – PS4 4K is superior to PC

logical argument – Buy a Pcresponse – Cant afford to spend the 500$ on a PC..specially not upgrade once every 6 yrssameactions – buys the PS4 4K model 2 years after buying the original PS4 essentially pays near triple the cost of owning a PC in the first place (2 consoles + console game prices + online subs + paying for porn cause console kids dont get the V/D)

i was hating this atfirst but it doesnt effect me,

I dont buy alot of third party software on console and im 100% certain this move will lead to more lazy devs, and poorer optimization

that’s sony’s problem and im sure if it happens it will be a pr nightmare.

Ps4 is my bloodborne machine, nothing more or less, if the new console can play it better ill buy it sooner or later.

Id prefer this to not be true tho. But even if its just better AA and a slightly better frame rate for bloodborne, ill bite.

I doubt for the rumored price of 400ish bucks that this thing will play more than 4k movies – if it even exists…

The Know put up a video on the 25th which rumors the price to be $400 with a release window of Q1, and says we’ll get a proper unveiling at E3.

As many reputable sites and sources are reporting this, there’s no way PS4.5 is just a rumor. It’s too big.

I’m torn. On the one hand, the hardware in PS4 and X1 was already obsolete the day next-gen began. On the other hand, it feels like there hasn’tbeena generation. I’m really hoping it’s just a brick you plug into the power socket that supplements the PS4’s hardware, rather than a whole new goddamn console. At $400, though, a new console seems more likely. One thing I can say is that I think aiming for 4K upscaling is a good idea. PS4/X1 had almost no breathing room, from what I understand.

With PSVR confirmed at $400, with no PS Move bundle, things are looking very costly…

Yeah, I don’t know. For one, it’s still a rumor. Second, is it really aimed at PSVR? If so, probably not me since I think VR would be uncomfortable and vertigo-inducing.

I have a new Bravia 4K. Game details are noticeably sharper compared to my 4 year old 1080p Bravia. But I would play the same games on both, depending on which room I’m in. I would trade in one of my PS4’s for this rumored upgrade, depending on reviews.

Is there a lot of people with 4K TVs? I mean, is there enough market to justify this new console?

False unless the 4K TV market is huge and I have been living under a rock.

Or in a third world country that is more or less the same when it comes to these things.

I am with everyone else on this. Sure, PC can give better graphics, fps, and mods, but I just love the simplicity of consoles (and the exclusives of the PS consoles). I do like taking stuff apart though. I once completely dismantled my PS3 controller to see how it works and try to fix the sticking analog stick. I learned a lot from that experiance, manly how the controllers work, and that some of the pieces are a bitch to put back together, I also took apart my PS3 to clear out the dust to prevent overheating and clog ups in venting. I found a dead spider in there.

this basically

I have a friend who builds PCs for extra money and for around $500 he would make me a really nice gaming computer, but then I would have to bug him every 2 years or so so do maintenance or upgrade parts :\

If my console dies I can just order a new one on Amazon and it arrives 1-2 days later, with the only effort on my part being pushing an on button

or I can drive to best buy/gamestop and have a new console within an hour

it’s nice knowing when a new game comes out I just have to put a disc in

Consoles for me are great because I don’t have to worry about anything.

Buy, pop disc in, bobs your uncle it works. With PCs even you have to worry about whether the computer is good enough, sort out graphics settings and whatever else, along with updating it.

Console you buy and take for granted. Makes gaming so much easier

I feel like 6 or 7 years of cutting edge relevance for a piece of technology is actually better than normal. Most pieces of tech are rendered obsolete much sooner than that. The TV I bought 7 years ago looks just fine, but it’s nowhere near in comparison to the features a modern TV has, and was pretty much already being surpassed by new TVs 2 years after I got it.

If I wanted to update it every once in a while, I’d buy a PC. I buy a console because I like a piece of hardware I can use for a rather long period of time without worrying about updating.

The same reason you buy new parts to update a computer every 1-2 years. If you bought a computer 10 years ago and bought new parts to keep it up to date with the biggest new games coming out, you’d have gone through 5 whole computers between then and now.

That example came completely out of my ass of course, but it does explain the point I’m making.

I’ll be fine with this so long as games continue to work on both versions for a good long while. I’ve only owned my PS4 for 14 months, so if I’m suddenly getting shut out of “new” PS4.5 games, I’m afraid that will probably be my cue to start thinking about finding some new pastimes. I understand that consoles can jump to a new cycle every 6 or 7 years, but this would be a bit to quick for me. Hopefully Sony isn’t following Apple’s footsteps.

I mean, playing games are kind of fun…

What’s the point of buying a console besides only needing to update every 6-7 years?
