MythForce Tugs at Nostalgia with An 80’s Saturday Morning Cartoons Roguelite
MythForce is a first-person roguelike that pays homage to those Saturday morning 80’s cartoons.
Welcome one and all to MythForce, a first-person fantasy roguelite game inspired by 80’s Saturday morning cartoons, is set to launch on multiple platforms this fall, including Nintendo Switch. The exciting news was announced during the recentNintendo DirectShowcase. Players can already get a taste of the action-packed adventure, as a demo is currently available on Steam as part of theSteam Next Fest.
Trent Oster, CEO of Beamdog, expressed his excitement about MythForce, stating, “It’s reminiscent of the pure unadulterated fun we had playing together as kids.” The game aims to capture the nostalgic charm of classic 80’s cartoons like He-Man, Thundercats, and more.
In MythForce, players will embark on a roguelike adventure, teaming up with friends or fellow adventurers in a four-player online cooperative multiplayer. The game takes place in the ever-changing Cursed Lands, where players can unleash their inner hero, engage in intense first-person combat, wield legendary weapons, and master powerful magic.
Featuring vibrant and colorful visuals inspired by the animation techniques of the 80s, MythForce promises to immerse players in a world of high fantasy swords and sorcery. Each swing and spell will be filled with thrilling sensations as hordes of enemies are defeated.
As players explore the areas, they will uncover magical artifacts and upgrades, enabling them to grow stronger with each playthrough. The game’s deep roguelike elements, combined with the ability to play cooperatively, make for an engaging experience.
MythForce’s recent release on Steam has already garnered a dedicated following and even has its own merchandise shop. Additionally, discussions are underway regarding the possibility of turning the game into an actual cartoon, further solidifying its status as a nostalgic gem.
While MythForce’s initial launch primarily focused on the core gameplay experience, the developers have listened to player feedback and are now emphasizing character and player progression. The latest release introduces a constellation system, allowing players to personalize their characters and develop unique playstyles. By placing earned perks into a constellation tree, players can tailor their characters’ abilities, increasing attack damage, energy, mobility, and more.
Further customization options await players in the game’s hub area, called “The Citadel,” where they can upgrade weapons, use emotes, and more. Although MythForce currently offers one chapter called “Bastion of the Beast Lord,” additional content is planned for the future, including two more chapters, “Crypt of the Necromancer” and “Cauldron of Bats.”
Speaking further of customization, players will be able to choose one of four heroes throughout their journey.
Victoria, the fearless leader of MythForce, wields her mighty mace and shield to combat Deadalus’ wicked minions. Known for her bravery, she fearlessly charges across the battlefield to protect her allies. Victoria, who previously served as Captain of the Queen’s Guard, resigned from her post to gather heroes from all corners of the kingdom. Her ultimate goal is to lead MythForce in a battle against the Castle of Evil.
Maggie, the talented mage of MythForce, brings a bit of magic to the battlefield. With her magical abilities, she summons her friendly owl companion to rain fire upon their enemies. Maggie possesses the unique ability to blink across the battlefield in an instant and can shield her friends with a protective magical bubble. A prodigious magician, Maggie astonished her peers at the renowned Lyceum, much to the chagrin of the previous star pupil, Hexstar. Now, she fights alongside MythForce, while Hexstar stands with the Castle of Evil.
Hawkins, the master archer of MythForce, excels at striking enemies from a distance. He possesses the uncanny ability to enter the spirit realm and haunt his foes, leaving them with a creepy chill. Hawkins surprises his enemies with explosive arrows, shattering their hopes of conquest. Initially a solitary monster hunter seeking vengeance for his mentor, Hawkins declined Victoria’s initial call to arms. However, after witnessing her heroic act of saving his town from horrors, he decided to lend his bow to MythForce.
Rico, a former assassin, now fights alongside his former enemies as a member of MythForce. His cunning nature allows him to employ dirty tricks, whether it’s throwing sand in the face of his foes or executing a sudden backstab. Despite his checkered past, Rico has embraced his new role as a hero. MythForce acknowledges the importance of having him on their side. Raised as an assassin within the Castle of Evil, Rico experienced a change of heart upon witnessing Victoria’s heroism. After suffering his first defeat at the hands of MythForce, he chose to join their ranks and fight against his former master.
Beamdog’s journey in creating MythForce has been a labor of love, and the development team is thrilled to bring the game to a wider audience.
