New Mass Effect: Andromeda Gameplay Shown at Playstation Meeting

At the Playstation Meeting today, which saw the unveiling of the PS4 Slim and the high powered 4K PS4 Pro, we were given a fresh look at gameplay fromMass Effect: Andromedarunning on the new PS4 Pro hardware, confirming some teased murmurs on social media.

The content shown was brief but gives us a look at the slick visuals the new entry in the Mass Effect franchise will feature. The footage started with the protagonistRyder, in this playthrough a male, making his way with hiscompanionsacross a mysterious high tech world.

Ryder made his way across the world using a jetpack to boost from platform to platform. Upon encountering a new specimen of flora, Ryder could scan the lifeform for information. Up ahead, a group of creatures referred to as Remnants floated by, with the party using caution to avoid detection.

The party progressed to the center of what they called the vault and activated a terminal which displayed a map of theHelius Clusterwhich marked a variety of points on the map which they referred to as potential othervaults, making it likely that vault hunting will be an element of the game. After the reveal, trouble ensues with the party fleeing the vault.

Emergence

Editor at Fextralife. I look for the substantial in gaming and I try to connect video games to the emotions and stories they elicit. I love all things culture and history and have an odd fondness for the planet Jupiter. I think my dogs are pretty awesome too.

Bioware said that both male/female versions of the PC exist together as brother and sister.

Clearly more of a tech demo for the ps4 “pro” then showcasing what MEA is all about. None the less I was glad to see some in game footage. I really like how that place looks theme wise. Even if MEA becomes an explore game it’s still set in the ME universe. So i’ll be happy.

The video look alright. Still not going to waste money to get a 4K tv.

Am I the only one not impressed by the graphics in that video? There were very few light sources and particle effects; yes the textures look better but no better than a modded ME3.Hmm.

Also the male stand in for Not!femshep looked very bleh.

It looks good and feels like Mass Effect. More exploring and less world-saving would be nice, I also like the look of the asari.

If that’s a subjective definition then so be it. In the future I will refrain from commenting on your articles.

Your subjective definition of gameplay is the difference here, and doesn’t have any bearing on what defines clickbait, which when invoked is a jab at author integrity. You’re welcome to disagree with what is and what isn’t gameplay but I resent the accusation that this is manipulative journalism.

I do value your articles. They are well written. But this time I have to disagree. I was excited to see some gameplay, but there is too little of it to call it that. Ryder walking and using a jetpack is not exactly what I call gameplay. The action part is even a cutscene.

Clickbait? I take issue with that from a personal integrity standpoint. Clickbait would be “EPIC ME:A GAMEPLAY INSIDE, SEE THE EXPLOSIVE CONTENT”

It’s gameplay. It’s short for sure, only 3 minutes but it’s still gameplay, especially in a year when we’ve had absolutely 0 seconds of it so far. There are at least morsels there of what we’re going to be doing (Vaults), the races along for the ride with humanity (Asari) and reference to a creeping menace (Remnants).

I saw it, and thus far I saw nothing to be impressed by. Sure, it looks pretty, but one would think that the first gameplay footage that they show would have something more than the character walking and hopping from place to place.

It astounds me how many people are already getting themselves so hyped up by that little bitty blip of a video.

My omnipresence Ofc :p

Has it? Look at the time stamp. You’ve responded within one minute! If that’s not magic then what is?

I didn’t receive a notification of your post! Your magic has faded

You got me excited for a sec. But, alas.

If the plot somehow involves a viscious cycle of annihilation via AI comming to “save” us all, where they may or may not harvest our bodies, I’m bailing.

I think it’s too early to tell and I don’t want to think closing the forum is specifically related to a possibly bad product, so I remain positive.

This video isn’t really a a Mass Effect Andromeda showcase, but rather a Playstation feature showcase, where they are showing off the new 4K capability with some outstanding graphics.

We know little to nothing of the gameplay itself, but we have little reason to believe the team would re-invent the wheel: they have a style that works and is popular, even if they streamline it or bring it closer to an exploration style experience I doubt it would be lacking on the key points we have come to expect such as story and characters. Dragon Age Inquisition was a lot of fun to me in this regard, with an intriguing plot that is clearly meant to be continued.

So for now, I’ll remain positive. The video got me wanting to see awesome environments and smooth gameplay. Let’s see if they deliver with content and story.

The only thing noteworthy about that “gameplay footage” was the the jetpack, other than that we were pretty much shown nothing. The fact the Bioware closed down BSN makes it very hard to get interested in this game. It also makes me skeptical of Bioware’s confidence in ME:A if they were confident in ME:A they would’ve shown actual gameplay i.e. combat, mako gameplay, customization etc. not just a jetpack in a glorified demo of the forstbite engine (not that the graphics are bad or anything).

There is a huge problem with the mass marketing of XBox one and PS4. Before these consoles got big, they were a niche market for students and busy adults. PC’s were more customization and meant to handle huge draws of info and gaming. Also, TV displays, until recently, could not handle high textures. While most gaming platforms translated games for consoles, they are all built on PC first and then ‘dumbed down.’ Now that TV monitors can keep up with PC monitors there is a huge market for “pretty” games. Note: I own my PS2 (I love it) and I have a PS4 and I have a mega-pc rig. I do not discriminate (I also have a PS1 in a museum box, an N64 and Atari with the original games. Ahem) .

A few years ago a game came out and had one pixel issue. The game reviewers were just so angry about it they lowered the game’s score. The small studio went bankrupt all because of one pixel being out of focus. Because of that game engines are going to “make it pretty, make it quick, have boobs and all the kiddies will love it.” Meanwhile the -meat and potatoes- of the gaming community are all 30+ and is long over that. So game companies instead put in old school references/easter eggs to keep the old farts happy meanwhile all the kids can go OMG DID YOU SEE THAT GRAPHIC?!!!! MICHAEL BAY IS THAT YOU?! Substance has been lost.

The reason why Skyrim remains popular, and DA:O is because of the continuity within the gaming community to keep the game alive through player added content. Current games are all about the bling and not about the story. Who needs a story when you can stare at something pretty? In my gypsy family we call it “deception by alliteration.” You think you know what you are getting but it is all fluff so you feel good on the outside, but inside you are missing something and because no one wants to feel left out, everyone hops onto the same bus tooting the same horn and the people who point out “Uh your bus is going no where” gets tomatoes thrown at them from the bus riders. This is largely why I keep quiet on many forums: I never feel as though I can bring up an unpopular opinion, even in a well constructed way, and have it being read with the spirit of how I wrote it : There is another side to the story and it is okay if there are issues with a game. Discussions should be open ended, I think. Ideas pushed and pulled. Alas, it is hard to talk of opinions when someone’s feelings are attached to the opinions.

I am not bitter, just practical. If anyone can show me why I should love a fluff game, I am all ears

… A jetpack. From platform to platform.

Because every console game needs to be a platformer, apparently.

Yeah, they’ve forgotten their roots.

heh.. dang, you really are a quick draw, Emergence

I’m finding it hard to muster my usual “New BioWare game? WHERE??” excitement. Maybe it’s because that video was not made to appeal to the masses, but to a specific subset of them that I am not part of. I am a bit confused why they would bother with the trip to Sony’s event for 2 tiny spots on camera and not show more than what they did.

The whole past year with them has just been weird, topped off like a cherry with the forum closure – and I really hate saying that, because I [i:3b24jbhs]adore[/i:3b24jbhs] the Mass Effect universe. I could go restart the first trilogy right now and have a blast (teehee), but when the only thing that made my heart start to skip a beat was the first note of the soft music at the end, I.. I’m just not sure where to go from here.

I read and then watched the video. They are overly concerned for graphics for the game, but the style is basically “We took ideas for No Man’s Sky and built them.” Explore, conquer and here is an Asari. I have every reason to believe this game will not live up to anything other than graphics much like DA:I where there is no substance to the graphics. I like art museums but I wouldn’t want to live in one. I told me brother (who is a game dev) that I bet ME:A will be a failed DA:I – explore “conquer” (read: plant a flag somewhere) and run around doing stupid stuff that has no story substance. He replies “Now you know why I left EA.”

Sigh. I will just play after it has been released for a year and people have worked out bugs. The saddest part is that it is on Frostbite and the reason why it is on Frostbite is so modders cannot make game changes. Why? EA is monopolistic like that. They want it their way and only their way.

RIP Bioware. You are the pawn of EA and we will never be able to enjoy your stories again.. just your pictures.

Note: My opinions do not necessary reflect on Fextralife, they are my own. Take with a grain of salt… or two
