Nioh Livestream Shows New Gameplay, Legend of Nioh Story Trailer

This morning,Niohhosted its second of three gameplay livestreams to show off the upcoming Action RPG from developer Team Ninja and publishers Sony and Koei Tecmo.

The stream began by showing the footage that was shown during this past Saturday’sKoei Tecmo demonstration. Afterwards they went through several screenshots and images ofNPCsand their correspondingGuardian Spirits. Afterwards they got into the meat of gameplay showing some stage playthrough culminating in theOgressbossfight we saw at thePlaystation Experience. As usual, the boss was not defeated. The team wrapped up with some conversation and an overview of thepre-order bonusesand a look at an in game feature that allows you to swap your appearance for other characters in the game likeHattori HanzoorTokugawa Ieyasuin exchange for someitems, as well as purchase newweaponsandgestures.

The stream wrapped up with an animated trailer titled Legend of Nioh which you can watch below:

The animated trailer has a unique art style that contrasts nicely with the fluid and stylized gameplay trailers the game has received to date.

The next and last official livestream for the game will be held on January 20th. Nioh releases for the PS4 on February 7th in the West, the 8th in Europe and the 9th in Japan.

interesting thing about the Ogress, she mentions the name “Nobuyasu” which probably means Matsudaira Nobuyasu, the first born son of Tokugawa Ieyasu (Tokugawa being born Matsudaira Takechiyo, having changed his name and claimed descent from the Minamoto clan with permission from the Imperial Court, though there is no evidence to suggest the relation). Nobuyasu was married to Tokuhime, the daughter of Oda Nobunaga but the couple did not produce a son in their union and Tsukiyama, Nobuyasu’s mother, just plain hated her. Eventually Tokuhime had enough and claimed to Nobunaga that Tsukiyama engaged in correspondence with Takeda Katsuyori, one of Nobunaga’s most bitter enemies, attempting to have a Takeda woman taken as Nobuyasu’s concubine.

Needless to say, Nobunaga was furious and Tokugawa, needing his alliance with Nobunaga, had Tsukiyama executed and ordered Nobuyasu to commit seppuku in fear of him taking vengeance for Tsukiyama. Yikes. Coincidentally, the stage in the demo is Futamata, where Nobuyasu was confined to after the accusations were made. This is another character bound to a place due to past grudges and the second to have some connection to Nobunaga (the other being Nouhime, the boss of the Honnouji stage).
