Osiris: New Dawn is anopen-worldsci-fi story set in the late 2000s. It centers around survival and the horrors of finding a hospitable planet to essentially replace Earth. The future of mankind is here, your mission is to journey across the universe in search of a new home. You’ll set up camp and build your base during the day while preparing for whatever unspeakable threats there are at night.
And for the most part, you’ll need to harvest materials and create your own farm to grow food. Can you and your friends survive the harsh worlds of the unknown? Are you prepared to face the hostile beings you’ll encounter?
The first thing to do in Osiris: New Dawn is to select your class. In total, there are four to choose from Scientist, Ranger, Marine, and Engineer. You can then invest several points into starting skills including Science, Engineering, and Combat.
These will all establish your expertise, whether you prefer to focus on research for survival, constructing buildings, or fighting against monsters, respectively. As you level up, you gain points, which you can then allocate across Strength, Speed, Stamina, and Health.
The game starts by sending you to the Gliese 581 Planetary System in the hopes of gaining more knowledge about certain planets for eventual colonization. Rather than having a smooth landing given the advancement in technology, your pod crashlands into a seemingly empty planet. At least, that’s what you think. First and foremost, you’ll then have to scour for resources to fix your suit and eventually your vehicle.
In total, there are four planets to explore. Each of these planets is distinct in terms of the biomes they feature and the creatures that are lurking everywhere. One can’t be too compliant since they tend to strike at night, making it necessary to plan out your next series of attacks to survive.
Osiris: New Dawn will remind players of another survival game called ICARUS in which they get to explore a planet to gather materials and build a second Earth. Lead Developer, Brian McRae, has confirmed that this game also draws inspiration from several movies such as Prometheus and The Martian to create a horrific and isolating feeling of despair, especially when you’re playing solo.
In the beginning, there are a series of introductory missions to ease you into the game and to introduce various mechanics related to crafting and collecting resources. After patching up your pod, you should be able to create a base of operations to serve as your temporary home while investigating how “liveable” the planet is. Here, you can mix and match structures, appliances, and utilities based on their usability and cost. You’ll also need to set up buildings to aid in food production. Through time, you can then create bots to help you manage your base.
Remember though that you’re not limited to base-building. Players can also improve their vehicles to traverse varied terrain better. Some can go as far as building their very own hovercraft. There’s even the option of crafting your very own Space Station to admire the beauty of the galaxy from the heavens above – talk about experiencing the entirety of space life!
Weapons in Osiris: New Dawn will have to be crafted, and this goes for Light, Heavy, and Melee Weapons. As you progress in the skill tree, you’ll be able to invest in increasing the damage for them to prepare yourself for the formidable bosses every planet has to offer.
It’s important to note that the enemies you face aren’t limited to creeping around during the night (although most of them spawn by then). A lot of them will attempt to attack you even as you gather resources. Ergo, you need to be fully equipped with the right tools to deal with the threats.
Fenix Fire Entertainment has added several expansions over 6 years of development. One of which is Dark Horizons. Here, you can explore dark caverns with bated breath. It’s a harrowing experience but it’s something you must do to gain access to rare materials that can only be obtained from the mines within. Lighting has also received a vast improvement, making scenes appear more realistic than ever. Furthermore, the equipment can now be recycled in order to reuse the parts that you can.
Osiris: New Dawn will continue to receive updates as there are more improvements and concepts the team is intending to make. I certainly can’t wait to see this game evolve into something more than what it currently is! There certainly seem to be more space-themed titles this year with the likes ofStarfieldand the sci-fi horrorDead Space remakealso coming.
