Persona 5 Tactica Battle Gameplay Trailer Showed off at Gamescom

Persona 5 Tactica Gamescom Trailer shows off the combat system’s nuances as well as a few familiar faces.

What trouble will the Phantom Thieves of Hearts get into this time? Let’s find out!

As we all know, Persona 5 Tactica is steering away from the traditional JRPG turn-basedcombatof the series. The spinoff instead is a nice blend of, well, tactics, and the high production value that people have grown to expect of the Persona series. Persona 5 Tactica mixes our favorite characters into a lighter XCOM-flavored game.

Players take control of three characters in battle, down from Persona 5’s 4 party group. Battlefields are grid-based and are littered with tons of obstacles, environmental hazards, and most importantly, cover. Having characters hide behind cover can drastically reduce the damage taken or even outright block attacks.

You will then want to find the right angle and ability to use to abuse this cover system.

Each character can perform an action in combat, aside from actually moving around. This can be either a melee attack, a ranged attack, or an ability and each will have their own specific use case. For example, Morgana, who is definitely not a cat, can make use of his wind abilities to knock enemies away. Sometimes you can even blow them out of cover, exposing them to a follow-up attack.

Persona 5 Tactica also has a degree of verticality in its levels, allowing for more strategic options. One example shown was that Yusuke (or Fox) can knock enemies off a roof, causing them to take massive damage upon landing.

Another useful tactic to use is to surround your enemies. If all three of your characters surround a group of foes, they will be linked with a fiery chain indicating that the “Triple Threat” attack is available. This devastating group assault takes is similar to the previous game’s “All Out Attack” and should deal massive damage.

Not all players will be acclimated to the game’s more tactical combat system, especially if this is their first foray into the sub-genre. To help this, the developers over at Atlus are implementing 5 different difficulty levels for players of all skill levels. These are “Safe”, “Easy”, “Normal”, “Hard”, and “Merciless”. The game difficulty can also be changed at any time.

While it isn’t clear what exactly each difficulty will change, it is safe to assume damage numbers will be inflated or deflated depending on the selection.

One mechanic that changes depending on the difficulty is the Baton Pass. Persona 5’s Baton Pass acted as a follow-up attack that you could trigger if you hit an enemy with its elemental weakness. In Persona 5 Tactica, this changes to allowing players to swap out any KO’d character with a fresh one. The easier difficulties will let you have access to multiple Baton Passes, while Merciless will only let players use it once.

Just with all Persona games in existence, the Velvet Room will play an integral part in managing your Personas. However this time, the footage gives off the impression that this area is less of a room and more of a forge. This otherworldly area will be your home base to manage all things related to Joker’s personas. It isn’t quite clear yet what else we can do besides merge or fuse existing personas into new ones.

Other footage floating around also gave a character spotlight on Makoto Niijima (or Queen). While the trailer is in Japanese, we do know that her Persona Johanna will make a reappearance. More importantly, she can ride her motorcycle Persona and literally run over enemies foolish enough to stand in a perfect line. Talk about efficiency!
