Phil Spencer Critiques Xbox’s Approach to Non-Exclusive Games
Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, has been discussing one of the most divisive topics in the gaming world: exclusives. The executive admitted that he made mistakes by not making certain games exclusive to Xbox.
Spencer is one of the most straightforward executives in the gaming industry. The head of Xbox often shares many of his opinions whenever he has the opportunity, and this time, he spoke about a very important topic: exclusives.
At a panel during PAX West, Spencer talked about those games that Xbox could have made exclusive to the brand but ended up being multiplatform. He mentioned two very well-known titles: Destiny and Guitar Hero.
Phil Spencernoted that he had “passed on” these popular games and shared with fans his mindset at the time, which led him to be cautious with his choices regarding exclusives. The director was very self-critical but admitted that he had no regrets.
“I’ve passed on some, I’ve made some of the worst game decisions,” he said after specifically mentioning the case of the two previously mentioned games.
“When Destiny was presented to us and we were asked if we wanted to sign it, we ended up not signing it. Obviously, it went with Activision, and seeing what it became, from an Xbox commercial perspective, is just a really interesting journey in terms of what Bungie built.”
Spencer pointed out that the online game initially “didn’t click” with him, as he’s not a “big PvP player,” although when the House of Wolves expansion was released, its concept eventually won him over completely.
He also acknowledged that when he saw Guitar Hero, he thought it wouldn’t “work” for Xbox. “Alex Rigopulos proposes a game where they’re going to make plastic guitars and connect them to consoles to then sell tracks…”
“I’m like, ‘Do we really think this is going to work?’ Some people played Guitar Hero,” Phil Spencer joked. “I’ve heard it became a pretty good game.” However, Spencer remained firm and assured that he had no regrets about his decisions.
“I’m not a person who regrets things. Maybe that’s a flaw of mine, but I passed on a lot of games,” he said, adding that his goal is “to look forward and be positive about the things we’re doing.”
The topic of exclusives continues to be controversial. Just last week, it was mentioned that if Black Myth: Wukong hasn’t been released on Xbox Series X|S, it’s not due to a technical issue, but because of an agreement with PlayStation, according to Forbes.
