Bethesda Softworks and Arkane Studios’ suspenseful space shooter/RPG Prey is now available for PS4, Xbox One and PC. We choose Prey as one of ourTop 5 RPGsfor the month of May. The game combines the vibe of BioShock and Dead Space with Dishonored gameplay as well as multiple endings and deep skill tree choices. Check out the launch trailer:
When you awaken aboard the Talos I space station, you that find you are the key subject of an experiment meant to alter humanity forever – but things have gone terribly wrong. Talos I has been overrun by an alien force, and you must stop the Typhon threat from destroying humanity. As Morgan Yu, and mankind’s last hope, fend off the alien infestation armed with the tools found on the station, your wits, weapons, and mind-bending abilities. Okay, Bioshock was downright classy with its atmosphere and Half-Life is basically the golden standard. I can’t really argue with that. And, of course, I haven’t played Prey myself or even watched other people’s gameplay. What I can say is that if this is how they’re trying to sell it, I can’t take it seriously as a horror game (though a few light horror elements bleed though). I can compare it to Metroid Prime in overall feel though, and that’s not a bad comparison. It’s just the impression the trailer gives me, is all.
So, if it actually does do atmosphere as well as Bioshock and the like, I’d be surprised but it’d be a pleasant kind of surprise. For someone looking to buy the game based off the trailer though, they may not actually be getting what they’d hoped they were.
I find a lot of comparisons to Bioshock and Half-Life. People seem to still get scared though. I know I got scared in Bishock, even if I had a shotgun in one hand, and fire and lightning coming out of the other.
Okay, definitely can’t call it a horror game anymore. Can’t be a horror game when the protagonist is this empowered.
On the other hand, Metroid Prime 2 was a very good game.
